Congratulations to MSE Program Director and INEG Department Head Dr. Ed Pohl on his appointment to Dean of the Graduate School and International Education.

Dr. Ed Pohl has been appointed as the new dean of the Graduate School and International Education, effective June 1. Pohl succeeds Curt Rom who served as interim dean since January 2022.

"I'd like to thank Dr. Rom for serving as interim dean of the Graduate School and International Education during this transition period," Provost Terry Martin said. "He is respected across campus as a faculty member and advocate for international education, and I'm grateful for his continued dedication to the University of Arkansas."

Pohl joined the U of A in 2004 as an associate professor of industrial engineering. From 2007 to 2014, he was the director of the operations management master's degree program, one of the largest graduate programs at the U of A. In 2010, he also became the director of the Master of Science in engineering program, and he continues to serve in this role. He served as the director of the Center for Innovation in Healthcare Logistics from 2013 to 2017, and he was promoted to full professor in 2013. He has served as the head of the Department of Industrial Engineering since 2014 and holds the 21st Century Professorship in Engineering.

"I'm honored to be named dean of the Graduate School and International Education, and I'm grateful for this opportunity," Pohl said. "My vision for GSIE is to be globally recognized for our innovative and transformative programs and to produce scholars who are diverse, creative thinkers, problem solvers and leaders who positively impact our state, nation and world."

A small satellite called CubeSat was launched on March 14 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. This effort was led by Dr. Adam Huang and with contributions from Dr. Larry Roe, both professors in the Mechanical Engineering department who teach astronautics and aerodynamics courses for the Master of Science in Engineering program.

Developed by mechanical engineering researchers, ARKSAT-1, a small satellite, or “CubeSat,” will take atmospheric measurements and test re-entry technology.
