During attic cleaning in an antique restoration we discovered these two checks. In 1974 the ECOA made it illegal to discriminate clients based on factors like s*x or marital status, but much earlier in 1942 two southern women were all about official bank business without a man in sight. The homesteader Mrs. Edna Casey received two checks for $5 and $10 from Miss Lillie Gourd. That was in July of 1942, and that's right gentlemen, she was single with a checkbook and even wrote it in her signature. The bank punched the check out to show the note had been paid. Edna kept her receipts and they are here 83 years later.
If anyone lorekeeps their family ancestry and would like to photocopy these signatures and documents please contact me (Jeff) at Sentinel Construction. We are interested in the Casey family history and their homestead construction in West Fork, AR.
