Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT)

Our mission is to develop and promote health and safety resources for the sheet metal industry, thereby creating a safer, injury-free workforce.

Jointly sponsored by SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation workers, and the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA), the Sheet Metal Occupational Health Institute Trust (SMOHIT) Inc. was founded in 1986 to address the impact of decades-long asbestos exposure on those working in the sheet metal industry. To date, tens o

f thousands of union sheet metal workers have been screened as part of its ongoing Job Hazards Screening program (formerly Asbestos Screening). SMOHIT has since expanded its mission to operate on four separate but related tracks: monitor and document the health of union sheet metal workers related to workplace exposures and hazards; provide safety information and training to promote best practices on and off the job; advocate for the physical, mental and emotional health and safety of SMART and SMACNA members with government and through likeminded allied organizations; and provide diet, exercise and other lifestyle information to address the health and wellness of union members and contractors. We offer the highest quality of safety training available, making the workforce more productive and economical. The well-being of sheet metal workers remains, as always, our primary focus.

Twenty-five years ago, the world watched as building trades members worked side by side with first responders on one of the worst days in American history, aiding in the recovery effort.

Today, we remember the lives lost to the 9/11 attacks, and we honor the tradesmen and tradeswomen who spent months at Ground Zero and the Pentagon. We also honor the memory of those who became sick from this work, ultimately losing their lives.

This is an example of why occupational health screening matters so much to us. Sadly, some workplace dangers do not show up right away but can spend years hiding in a person’s body before they are diagnosed.

We stand with everyone who lost someone that day and with every union member who answered the call to recover, clean up and rebuild.

Today, we take a step back from our mission to improve the physical, mental and emotional well-being of SMART members and their families to say thank you. Labor Day honors the worker, and we thank all those who work in the union sheet metal industry for their dedication and hard work. We hope you have a safe and relaxing holiday.

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month, and we want every SMART member to know that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Our trade runs on trust: trusting the person next to you on the job, trusting your training and trusting your crew. That same trust extends off the jobsite, too. 📍 Workplace Exposure Research Program testing in Springfield, MO, is a wrap!

A huge thank you to SMART Local 36 Business Manager Ray Reasons and his team for their support in making the event a success. This was the third visit for our mobile X-ray unit to assist Local 36 members this month.

Over 210 members across the three SMART Local 36 locations were excited, engaged and energized throughout the process.

Our Workplace Exposure Research Program helps promote health awareness, as well as early detection of diseases related to asbestos and silica exposure to the members through testing, guidance, and follow-up support.

We've been out in the field, and it's always the best part of what we do. 🤝

Recently, we had the pleasure of visiting members at Sheet Metal Workers Local 83 in Albany, NY and Local 36 in Fulton and St. Louis, MO — spending time on the ground, learning from the members we serve, and strengthening the connections that make this community strong.

To every member who took the time to meet with us: thank you. You're the reason SMOHIT exists, and visits like these remind us why the work matters.

This Memorial Day, SMOHIT honors the servicemen and women who gave their lives in defense of our nation and our way of life.

SMOHIT exists because we believe every worker — and every family — deserves to be taken care of. Today, we extend that belief to the fallen heroes of our armed forces and the families who carry the weight of their sacrifice. You are not forgotten. You are deeply, permanently honored.

Today is Workers' Memorial Day. We pause to honor the Sheet Metal Worker Brothers and Sisters who never made it home from the jobsite. Their sacrifices are not forgotten — they are the reason we fight every single day for safer working conditions.

At SMOHIT, our mission is rooted in their memory. This means investing in safety training, hazard prevention, and — just as importantly — mental health support for the workers who carry the weight of this industry on their shoulders.

A safe worker is a whole worker. Physical safety matters. Mental health matters. Every life lost on the job is one too many.

Today we remember. Every day we train, educate and protect.
