Our office is closed today in honor of Labor Day. Labor Day is a U.S. federal holiday honoring the contributions of workers and the labor movement to the nation’s development and prosperity.
The holiday originated in the late 19th century during the Industrial Revolution, a period when workers often endured long hours, low pay, and unsafe working conditions. Labor activists and trade unions advocated for a day to honor workers and promote fair labor standards. The first organized Labor Day parade took place in New York City in 1882, sponsored by the Knights of Labor, and the idea quickly spread across the country. By 1894, Labor Day became an official federal holiday in the United States, following legislation signed by President Grover Cleveland. Peter J. McGuire, a union leader, is often credited with proposing the holiday, though Matthew Maguire, a machinist and secretary of the Central Labor Union, is also cited as a founder.
Today, Labor Day is celebrated with parades, barbecues, and cultural events, and it is traditionally seen as the end of summer in the U.S.
