What is succulent dormancy?
Just like us, many succulents have periods of active growth and periods of rest. Their resting phase is called dormancy. During dormancy your succulents growth slows and they may need less water and attention. 😴

Not all succulents go dormant at the same time. Some are summer dormant others are winter dormant.

Fun fact: Aeoniums like the sunburst in your May box are summer dormant and do most of their growing during the cooler months.
However! Most succulents are opportunistic growers, meaning dormancy isn’t always an on/off switch. If they’re kept indoors in they may continue growing slowly instead of going fully dormant like they would outdoors in intense summer heat.

☀️ Yup… even sun loving plants can get sunburned.

Many succulents protect themselves with farina, that soft powdery coating on their leaves that acts like a natural sunscreen. Some succulents also change colors, grow thicker leaves or close their pores to help survive intense heat and sun. Nature is so fascinating!

Sudden direct sun and extreme heat can still cause damage, especially if they haven’t had time to acclimate. Always harden off your succulents before placing them in direct sun.☀️

This month’s plants each have their own unique way of growing 🌱 Aeoniums are best propagated through stem cuttings and Gasterias produce little pups around the base that can eventually grow into entirely new plants. Nature always finds a way to multiply and that’s the best part because you end up with even more plants ☀️

Propagation Tip: It’s usually best to wait until your aeonium has developed a small stem and a few more heads before taking a cutting. This gives you a stronger rosette to work with and typically leads to easier and more successful propagation

Aeonium Sunbursts are one of the most delicate plants we ship, especially while they’re still young and growing. Their variegated leaves are thinner, softer, and much more sensitive than most succulents which means even the slightest rubbing during shipping can leave little dark scuff marks or bruising.

We call them beauty marks because they’re common on young variegated Aeoniums and purely cosmetic. It gives them character.

That’s also why we’ve started adding cotton around some of them during transit. Theymark very easily, even when packed carefully.

As the plant matures, the leaves become thicker, waxier, and more stable, and all of those little marks eventually grow out with new growth. 🌱
