NIMBee Adventures

NIMBee Adventures I'm a first year beekeeper, getting ready to embark on a crazy adventure. I've taken classes, read books, and watched videos but still don't feel ready.

You can watch it all unfold alongside me!

I’m a proud mom to FIVE hives now. 😂 Adopting this abandoned one. Needs a name and I’m running out of Taylor Swift songs!!

Update: this hive used to be owned by a guy who moved about 90 minutes away. My guess is he left it because the blackberry overtook the area.

Jacob used the w**d whacker (we brought it for the w**ds around my other hives) and made a path and work area. The w**ds were right up to the hive. Hopefully they’ll be happy with more room to fly in and out and better airflow.

Four boxes is a lot for one colony. I’m curious about what’s happening inside but I’m going to give her a few days to settle down after the excitement of someone disturbing the area.

It looks the blackberry flow will be early this year, thanks to the recent heat. I’m excited to see what Augustine, Betty, Cornelia, and Daisy Mae yield! Second boxes went on last week and honey supers may be on even sooner! 😍🐝🍯

These new bees work fast. I had to remove one frame from each hive to make room for the queen cage, which hooks over another frame. Bees hate extra space so each hive quickly built comb to fill the gap between two frames. All four queens have been released and each hive was busy! Can’t wait to inspect later in the week.

They’re here….

So excited to see the boxes buzzing with activity. Daniel from Shipwreck Apiaries installed while I offered assistance. They all look happy and healthy. A beautiful day to move in!

I’m expecting a lot of honey and the store at Fall City Farms will sell some of it, too. They grow vegetables and flowers - it’s amazing, so show them love this summer!

I harvested 21 lbs of honey yesterday from my Beetrice hive! She is thriving - a new hive (3 months old, and she is making honey like it’s going out of style.

I’ll be selling it soon but had a question. I’ve been calling this page NewBee Adventures but as I get ready to launch a small business selling honey, I was thinking of changing the name.

You may remember my HOA issue from last year? I do. I think about it all the time.

Do you know what NIMBY means? Not In My Backyard?

I’m thinking of calling my page/honey NIMBee Honey.

Yay? Nay?

I woke up with three hives and will go to bed tonight with four!

I was able to complete my first good inspection of the year yesterday, which is awfully late but weather and illness kept me away. The result was finding that Bertha had a called swarm cell! This means she will swarm within 24 hours.

I closed up Bertha right away and kicked myself a little more for not having my extra hive ready. Then this morning I decided ready or not, I’m going to see what I can do.

I came to the farm and went through Bertha frame by frame, hoping to find the queen. I couldn’t see her but I found 5 more capped swarm cells (that’s 5 potential queens, in addition to the one I found yesterday). I decided to create a split anyway.

I took a frame with 3 swarm cells and capped brood, 2 more of brood, 2 with resources, and used other frames I had to create a new hive. Having the brood, queen cells, and resources means the bees won’t leave their new hive because they don’t abandon babies.

I’m sure Bertha will still swarm today and I’m hanging out for a bit, waiting to see what happens and also waiting for Jacob to bring me some more frames to refill Bertha (I didn’t plan well).

We’ll see what happens!

The weather has made it difficult to check on my bees. I went over today and added additional boxes to Dorothea and Beetrice. They are absolutely bursting with bees and need more space. I will probably attempt to split them soon! to avoid swarms! Bertha was super busy and also full of many bees. ❤️🐝

And then there were three!

Beetrice and Dorothea moved in today. Bertha is now a little less lonely. All three hives are happy and healthy.

If you ever wondered whether dandelions are a good resource for bees, YES. These lucky ladies are surrrounded by thousands of dandelions and immediately went to work.

Here’s to a new season!
