Since our beginning in 1987, our founders, skilled craftsmen and seasoned staff have shared a passion for creating elegance in wood. Whatever the project size, we craft every element one at a time, using the tools most appropriate to the work - from traditional hand tools to digital and multi-head machinery. Throughout the mid-South, architects, designers and building professionals value our knowledge and problem-solving techniques. JAMES DUNN

In 1987, James Dunn founded Vintage Millworks, focusing the organization and team of craftsmen on design and fabrication of custom architectural millwork. Primary objectives were, and continue to be, utilizing appropriate materials, techniques, application, proportion and design.

Inspired by early childhood experiences on his grandparents’ farm in rural Michigan, his youthful vision of sustainable living would incorporate reclaimed old growth lumber from salvaged barns and house parts into new classical architectural millwork, cabinetry and furniture.

As a craftsman, formally trained in crafting fine furniture, cabinetmaking and boatbuilding, James settled in Middle Tennessee in 1975 to pursue his passion of becoming a self-supporting artisan. The love of classical architecture, beautiful landscapes, garden design and their effects on the human condition continue to inspire and guide his principles and his life’s work.

If there’s one person who truly holds us all together, it’s Susie. 💛 For 13 years, she’s been the steady heartbeat of Vintage Millworks. Referred to VMI by her former boss, she quickly found the perfect workplace fit — and we truly can’t imagine the team without her.

While she may not claim a favorite species of wood, Susie loves walking the shop floor and watching each project transform from raw materials into a finished masterpiece. 🪵✨ Seeing the progress and craftsmanship come together is her favorite part of the job.

Outside of work, Susie enjoys shopping 🛍️ and a well-earned nap 😴 when she can.

👶 Fun Fact: She loves spending time with her family — especially her new grandbaby.

With Vintage Millworks: 3 Years

Elijah joined Vintage Millworks new to woodworking but eager to learn — and that drive shows in his work every day. He was drawn to VMI because of our commitment to fine craftsmanship and the value we place on mastering the intricacies of true millwork. Over the past three years, he’s embraced that challenge and continues to sharpen his skills with every project.

Favorite Wood: Walnut — for its rich tone and timeless character.

Outside the shop, Elijah is a competitive pistol shooter, bringing the same focus and precision to his hobby that he does to his craft.

Fun Fact: He’s a fan of hot peppers — the hotter, the better.
