What’s your favorite wood species?
Mine is old growth cypress. It is often referred to around here as “sinker cypress” since it comes from river recovered logs lost in early logging efforts. These ancient logs are often 2000 years old or even older, and have intense colors from soaking in mineral-rich mud and silt for 100+ years. On top of its beauty, it tools amazingly and provides a great texture for furniture.

Pictures have a hard time capturing the beauty and mystique of this sinker cypress bed. The headboard coming from one full slab of what was around a 2000 year old tree. There is no stain applied to this lumber, it is all natural color. This type lumber no longer grows in nature, but has to be recovered from river bottoms where they were once lost in early logging practices.
