🐴 Another Happy Equestrian Client! 🐴

At Building By Design and BBD Excavation, we take pride in helping local horse owners create safer, more functional spaces for their animals.

Recently, we brought a severely worn 180’ x 80’ paddock back to life. Over time, heavy use and weather had taken a toll on the riding surface, so we completely re-established and re-graded the paddock before importing and installing approximately 80 tons of stone dust to create a smooth, stable footing surface.

The same property also had a turnout area that became nearly unusable during wet weather, with horses sinking into mud up to their knees. To solve the problem, we excavated a 20’ x 150’ area approximately 12 inches deep and built a proper all-weather turnout pad from the ground up.

-80 Ton of #1 Stone
-80 Ton of 21a paver base to lock in #1 Stone
-40 Ton of Stone Dust

Our process included:
✔️ Installing heavy-duty filter fabric
✔️ Placing approximately 5 inches of #1 stone for drainage and structural support
✔️ Installing and compacting 4 inches of 21A crusher run to lock everything together
✔️ Finishing with a layer of stone dust to provide a horse-friendly surface while maintaining excellent drainage

To complete the project, we also repaired an existing drainage swale to help direct water away from the paddock and turnout areas.

The result is a cleaner, safer, and more usable environment for both horses and riders—regardless of the weather.

Nothing dresses up a home quite like a new front door. 🚪✨

Your front entry is one of the first things people notice when they visit your home, and upgrading it can completely transform the overall curb appeal and feel of your property. A properly selected front door can make a home feel more welcoming, updated, and custom-tailored to your style.

For this project, we installed a beautiful ProVia entry door system, known for its quality, durability, energy efficiency, and overall craftsmanship. Not to mention, even though I’m usually not a huge fan of storm doors, this particular storm door matched the new ProVia door perfectly — and it turned out awesome for this home improvement project.

Small details make a big difference, and this one really brought the whole front elevation together.

Another exciting transformation underway in the Virginia Run community.

This kitchen renovation started with a space that simply wasn’t functioning the way the homeowners needed it to. Our goal was to completely rework the layout and create a much more open, functional, and versatile space the family can truly enjoy for years to come.

We removed partition walls, installed a brand-new window for additional natural light, and corrected several framing issues left behind from the original construction over 45 years ago. It’s always important to us to not only make things look beautiful — but to make sure everything behind the walls is done correctly as well.

This project also includes a very spacious adjacent laundry room that will add a tremendous amount of everydayj functionality and storage for the homeowners.

One of the coolest features we added is some modern glass technology on the new door leading out to the deck — definitely something worth checking out in the video.

We’re excited to keep bringing this vision to life and can’t wait to share the finished product.

🔨 Kitchen Transformation Underway! 🏡

We just kicked off demo on this kitchen renovation, and we’re already making big moves to completely transform how this space functions for our clients.

This project is all about better flow, more storage, and smarter design. We’re reworking the layout to create a spacious laundry room and pantry, giving the home the kind of everyday functionality that makes a real difference.

We’ve also:
✔️ Installed a new larger window to bring in more natural light
✔️ Updated all plumbing to ensure everything is done right behind the walls
✔️ Repositioned key elements in the kitchen for a more efficient layout
✔️ Designed space for a large island—perfect for prep, gathering, and everyday use

Right now it’s all demo and rough work—but this is where the foundation for a high-quality build begins.

🚿 Shower Remodel – Done Right the Second Time 🚿

This project started as a repair from a previous contractor installation that unfortunately didn’t hold up the way it should have. We were brought in to correct the issues and rebuild the space the right way — from the ground up.

We took this one all the way down to the studs and replaced every component, from framing and construction to the finished product. No shortcuts — just a proper, code-compliant build designed to last.

Upgrades and improvements included:
✔️ Full shower rebuild with proper waterproofing and sealing
✔️ Added a privacy wall for better function and comfort
✔️ Installed additional niches for clean, built-in storage
✔️ Added a horizontal window for natural light
✔️ Replaced the outdated window with a new vertical casement window
✔️ Replaced and properly sealed all fixtures and handle sets

Details matter — especially in wet areas where failure isn’t an option.

If your space wasn’t done right the first time, we’ll make sure it is.

We’re excited to begin another renovation project in the Virginia Run community in Centreville.

This upcoming project will feature a full kitchen and laundry room renovation, focused on improving both functionality and overall design. From layout adjustments to upgraded finishes, every detail is being carefully planned to create a space that works better for everyday living while maintaining a clean, high-end look.

We recently had the opportunity to install a brand-new front entry door for a longtime client here in Springfield, and the results speak for themselves.

 Another one in the books in Clifton, VA 💪

Wrapped up a final footing dig for a great builder/architect team, and everything came out exactly how it should—clean, precise, and ready for the next phase.

The builder was extremely happy with the results, and we even took the time to do a light rough grade to knock down the spoils pile and leave the site in better shape than we found it.

We take pride in not just getting the job done, but doing it right and helping keep projects moving smoothly for our partners.
