UC IPM Spotlight: Powdery Mildew on Roses 🌹

White powdery growth on rose leaves and new shoots may be powdery mildew.

Watch for:
• White powdery patches
• Distorted or weakened new growth
• Shaded areas with poor airflow
• Warm days and cool nights

Helpful steps include improving sunlight and air circulation, spacing plants properly, removing affected leaves, and disposing of infected material.

If treatment is needed, use only a product labeled for the specific plant and disease. Always follow the label.

Spring-Flowering Bulbs 🌷

Fall is the time to plan for spring color in Exeter landscapes.

Daffodils, Dutch iris, freesia, and tulips can all be part of a seasonal bulb display, but each has different requirements.

• Plant in loose, well-drained soil
• Set bulbs approximately three times as deep as the bulb’s diameter
• Plant with the pointed end facing upward
• Daffodils, Dutch iris, and freesia are generally reliable outdoors in our area
• Standard tulips and hyacinths may need pre-chilling in our mild-winter climate
• Water after planting and maintain light moisture while roots establish

For Exeter’s USDA Zone 9b–10a conditions, variety selection and drainage are important.

Which bulbs are you planting this fall?

Pressure, Flow, Friction Loss & Zone Capacity 💧

A sprinkler problem is not always a sprinkler problem. An irrigation system may be affected by:

• Static pressure: pressure when water is not flowing
• Dynamic pressure: pressure while the zone is operating
• Flow: the volume of water the source and piping can deliver
• Friction loss: pressure lost as water moves through pipe, fittings, valves, and elevation changes
• Zone capacity: the amount of irrigation equipment a zone can operate without exceeding available flow

Correct pipe sizing, hydraulics, and zone design help prevent weak coverage, misting, uneven application, and poor system performance.

Plant Spotlight: Mexican Bush Sage 🌿

Salvia leucantha is a strong fall-blooming choice for Exeter and the southern San Joaquin Valley.

• Hardiness: USDA Zones 9B–10A
• WUCOLS: Low (L) in the Central Valley region
• Exposure: Full sun
• Soil: Well-drained soil
• Bloom: Late summer through fall
• Size: Approximately 3–4 feet tall and wide
• Maintenance: Prune after flowering to maintain shape

Its flowers can also support pollinator-friendly landscape beds. Would you use Mexican bush sage in your landscape?

Fall Fertilizer: Weak or Thin Turf 🍂

Fall is a good time to evaluate weak or thin turf—but the right treatment depends on why the lawn is struggling.

Before applying fertilizer:

• Check irrigation coverage and soil moisture
• Look for compaction, thatch, pests, or disease
• Choose a formulation based on the turf’s actual needs
• Use controlled-release nitrogen when appropriate
• Consider iron when color is the concern
• Avoid overfertilizing before overseeding or other treatments

A healthy lawn starts with diagnosing the problem before choosing the product.

UC IPM Pest Spotlight: Snails and Slugs 🐌

Fall moisture can make snails and slugs more active in landscape beds.

Look for:

• Irregular holes in leaves
• Feeding damage overnight
• Slime trails
• Snails or slugs under mulch, pots, boards, or debris
• Damage in shaded, moist areas
• Excess irrigation or poor drainage

Management may include reducing hiding places, correcting irrigation problems, hand removal, and using only products labeled for the pest and site being treated.

Bagging or mulching? 🍂

Mulching works best with regular mowing, dry clippings, and manageable grass height.

Bagging may be better for tall growth, wet conditions, heavy leaves, or a cleanup-focused finish.

The right choice depends on the condition of the lawn—not a one-size-fits-all rule.

What does ET mean in irrigation?

ET stands for evapotranspiration—the combined water lost from the soil and plants through evaporation and plant transpiration.

Field capacity is the amount of water soil can hold after excess water has drained away.

These concepts help determine:

• How much water the landscape needs
• When irrigation should run
• Whether the soil is staying too wet
• When plants may be approaching stress
• How to reduce runoff and waste
• How to adjust irrigation as weather changes

Good irrigation scheduling is based on plant demand, soil, weather, and system performance—not a calendar alone.
