Most roof drainage problems don’t start with a storm. They start with debris that’s been sitting on the roof for a season or two.

Leaves and pine needles accumulate on the surface, work into the valleys, and eventually end up in the gutters.

When the path water needs to take is blocked, whether that’s a clogged valley, a packed gutter, or a downspout that’s not moving water far enough from the foundation, the water goes somewhere else.

And “somewhere else” is usually fascia, siding, or the crawlspace.
Keeping the roof surface clear is the first line of defense for the whole system.

If you’ve got trees hanging over your roof, summer is the window to deal with what’s been building up.

Dry debris clears faster.

Moss releases more easily.

And once the surface is clean, you can see the condition of your roof much more easily. Meaning if there are questionable spots that may lead to leaks- you’ll know.

Homeowners usually don’t start thinking about cleaning their roof until rainy season hits, and they see their gutters overflowing.

Pro tip- the time to clean your roof is in the Summer BEFORE the rain gets that moss and debris wet and sticky.

Can we clean your roof in the Fall and Winter? Absolutely. But it’s usually easier, faster, and less expensive to do it when all that debris is dry.

Moss on a roof looks like a cosmetic problem. It’s not.
Moss holds moisture against your roofing material around the clock- not just during rain, but between storms too.
Over time that trapped moisture accelerates wear, works underneath shingles, and creates the conditions for rot and mold in the structure below.
And it doesn’t have to look dramatic to be doing damage. If it’s green and growing, it’s holding water.
Around here, moss is less an ‘if’ and more a ‘when’. The difference is whether you catch it early or find out about it the hard way.
