Did you know most tree roots stay in the top 18 inches of soil, but some species roots can grow above ground while others can even extend hundreds of feet below. Holding up a tree is considered a tall order, but surprisingly most trees are held down by shallow roots. These shallow roots are in the top 18 inches of soil but more than half are located even higher in just the top 6 inches. Tree roots thrive in the shallower soil because the nutrients and conditions tend to be the best for growing. What trees lack in depth they always make up laterally. For example mature oak’s roots could extend four to seven times the width of the tree’s crown. Talk about a wide reach!
