One of the plants that will be featured at the Backyard Botanicals sale on May 30th is BISTORT. Early bloomer that is a great accent to a lilac bush. It spreads but not aggressively. Big new: Bunnies are busy eating other plants and leave this one alone.

2026- Starts off with a promise:

At our January 7th meeting of the Highland Garden Club we will be Winter Sowing seeds again this year. For thousands of years cultures across the globe have honored the promise of the Winter Solstice - that the death of winter will be followed by the life-sustaining rebirth of the earth’s plants. Winter sowing celebrates the solstice by sowing seeds around December 21st when sustained low temperatures naturally provide the prepared jugs you will leave outdoors the needed cold stratification period, and pose no risk of early germination.

We will have a pretty broad variety of native seeds our members to choose from again this year, including some harvested from ‘Nancy’s Garden’, however, feel free to bring a seed packet of your own if you want. Natives thrive with this seed sowing practice, but many people winter sow their vegetable starts and annual flowers. Pretty much any seed that isn’t a tropical can be winter sown - it will lay dormant until the outside temperatures are right for it to germinate.

We’re very excited to share this simple, cost-effective, and fun method of seed starting with you again this year. No need for indoor lights, no seed trays, no need to cold stratify seeds in your refrigerator - Mother Nature does it all outside, and come late spring you’ll have lots of baby plants to move into your gardens, share with friends, or donate to our Backyard Botanicals plant sale! Our customers are always looking for more natives and we hope to be able to provide more every year.

December 2025 Meeting was our 3rd (?) annual members holiday floral design session. We made a few gifts for past members that were not able to attend and also for ourselves to take home as centerpieces for our holiday tables. All the creations were so creative and different!
