Does Bagging or Leaving Grass Clippings Create Thatch?
The short answer: No!
One of the biggest lawn care myths is that leaving grass clippings on your lawn causes thatch buildup. In reality, grass clippings are made up of mostly water and break down quickly, returning valuable nutrients like nitrogen back into your lawn.
So what actually creates thatch?
The thick brown layer shown in this image is made up of living and dead stems, roots, rhizomes, and stolons that decompose much more slowly than grass clippings. When these plant materials accumulate faster than nature can break them down, a thatch layer develops.
A thin layer of thatch (less than ½ inch) is normal and can even help protect the soil. However, excessive thatch can:
• Block water, air, and fertilizer from reaching the roots.
• Create a home for insects and lawn diseases.
• Lead to shallow rooting and increased drought stress.
• Make your lawn less healthy and less responsive to treatments.
How can you prevent excessive thatch?
✔️ Mow at the proper height and never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time.
