These abandonments are often result of limited options for personal disposal. One of our primary goals when cleaning up illegal dumps and abandoned camps is to leave no trace. This particular project was right near the flood line of one of Oregons most beautiful bays. By removing the literal tons of waste from this area, we mitigated any potential of the waste intruding into the nearby waterway!

When picking up waste from abandoned camps, for our safety, we typically opt to maneuver the waste with litter pickers and heavy equipment. At this camp in particluar there was a fair volume of sharps and naroctics paraphenalia. Once narcotic paraphenalia is found our teams are teams are trained to communicate what they've found and handle these illicit items. Sharps present a great risk to our teams as they are capable of transferring a litany of bloodborne pathogens.

Team introductions! Jared!
Jared is one of our Drivers, Equipment Operators and Response Technicians here at Hazmat One (HZ1). He has been working at HZ1 for nearly a year total. His hobbies include fishing, dirt biking (riding and maintenance), and turning wrenches/fixing things. He is a man of the grill, with BBQ meats being his go to favorite food. BBQ capped off with an ice cream holds a special place for this fella. He recently acquired a new puppy and is excited to continue training her as she grows into her role in his pack. One of his memorable HZ1 moments was responding to a log truck incident and having to crawl in the mud to access the fuel tanks for a pump off. He has been earning a reputation of being Jonny on the spot and continues to add value to the team. He prides himself on making good on the HZ1 promise of 24/7, anytime and anywhere! His favorite thing about working at HZ1 is his co workers; you would be hard pressed to find kinder and harder workers around. One of his professional goals is to obtain his CDL and keep finding ways to become better. A personal goal of his this year is to get his project Jeep exactly how he wants it!

Yesterday afternoon the Oregon Department of Transportation contacted Hazmat One to conduct an illegal encampment cleanup. Today we conducted that cleanup! ODOT had been working diligently all week, however they encountered a potentially dangerous situation, prompting the call. After a brief site assessment Thursday afternoon, Hazmat One understood their objective. Priority for this project was safety. Numerous needles (ranging from 350-400 sharps), massive collections of biological waste, and other hazardous materials were found. This encampment sat on the banks of the Row River: a primary feeder to one of Oregon's jewels - The Willamette River. We were more than happy to answer the call. Hazmat One handled the call with grace and efficiency: providing a cleaner environment in the Willamette Valley.
