Thinking about adding a little (or a lot) more space to your home this fall?

We're wrapping up another residential addition in partnership with Kalau Builders, and it's a great example of how thoughtful design and teamwork can make a difference.

The goal was to create a guest bedroom suite for the homeowners' children and grandchildren, with an addition that feels like it's always been part of the home.

With less than five feet of access along one side of the house, this project came with some unique construction challenges. Through close coordination with Kalau Builders, we've worked through those complexities while keeping the client's vision, budget, and timeline at the center of every decision.

Six Degrees Construction Company built a full-scale siding and window mockup at Tree Tops so the team could review the details before moving forward.

The mockup gives Arbor South and the construction team a chance to look at weather barrier transitions, siding spacing, trim, window details, and paint colors together.

A small mockup can help answer a lot of questions for the team!

Not every site comes with an easy answer.

Ryan Rojas, Principal at Arbor South Architecture, works through everything from steep slopes and grand views to setbacks, easements, zoning, and height restrictions.

Instead of treating those constraints as something to work around, they become part of the design problem. And sometimes, they’re what lead to the most interesting solution.

There’s a lot happening at Treetops.

This historic renovation is progressing, from existing framing and foundation conditions to exterior detailing, site work, and the careful coordination that connects it all.

Projects like this reveal themselves layer by layer. As construction moves forward, Arbor South continues working closely with Six Degrees Construction Company to respond to existing conditions, refine details, and keep the larger design moving in the right direction, with Stangeland & Associates Landscape Architecture and Design leading the site design..

A good before-and-after is about more than a new look.

For this 1990s home, the goal was to create a larger, more welcoming front porch, bring more character to the exterior, and accommodate larger garage doors for different vehicle types. Rather than starting from scratch, we looked to the home’s existing materials and forms for cues, using what was already there to guide a thoughtful exterior refresh.

The result is a home that feels renewed, while still connected to its original character.

Projects are always about more than just the building.

For Looking Glass, the spaces they create have to support youth, staff, safety, healing, and daily care. That kind of work requires more than a standard design process - it requires listening, patience, and a deep understanding of the mission behind the project.

Over the years, Arbor South has had the privilege of supporting Looking Glass across shelters, drop-in centers, and residential treatment facilities. We’re grateful for the trust Chad Westphal and the Looking Glass team have placed in us, and for the opportunity to contribute to spaces that serve such important work in our community.

On a recent site visit to the Oregon Coast, our team checked in on two projects in Yachats and one in Lincoln County; one is beginning excavation, another moving into framing, and a third nearing insulation.

For anyone planning a custom home, this is an important part of the process. We stay involved during construction to review progress, answer questions, and work closely with the builder as the design moves from drawings into the field.

All three projects are being built in collaboration with Cunningham Built, and we’re grateful for the care, coordination, and problem-solving that goes into bringing each one to life.

There’s something especially rewarding about seeing a home take shape one decision, one detail, and one site visit at a time.
