A red maple with a huge hollow at the base, and a playground just steps away. 🌳

David Anderson stopped to film this tree in an urban park, but it was the play set behind it that told the bigger story. Swings, a slide, ride-on carts and a park bench all sit right where this tree would land if it failed.

When we assess a tree's risk, we look at more than the tree. We also look at the target: anything a falling tree or limb could hit. Here is what David pointed out:

🔍 The cavity is at least a third, and maybe half, of the trunk's diameter
⚠️ A defect that size is a potential hazard
👧 The target is a busy spot where kids play and families sit

A hollow doesn't mean every tree is about to fall, but size and location matter a lot. David doesn't think anyone has pointed this one out, and that's why a professional set of eyes is worth it.

What is Leaf Scorch?
Mayer Tree Service stopped by a condo complex in Watertown and noticed this Norway maple showing leaf scorch — basically "sunburn" for trees. 🌳☀️🔥

Quick summary:
- What it looks like: brown, crispy leaf edges not always a sign of long-term drought.
- Why it’s happening: very hot, dry weather + a limited soil profile (not a lot of usable water in the root zone).
- Our plan: deep watering and light fertilization, then monitor to see how it recovers. 💧🧪

Homeowner tips to help prevent/repair leaf scorch:
- Water deeply and infrequently to encourage deep roots (especially during heat waves). 💧
- Add mulch 2–3" thick, keeping it off the trunk to retain moisture and cool roots. 🌿
- Check soil moisture before assuming total drought; sometimes it’s surface dry, but shallow soils are the issue.🔍
- Avoid heavy late-season pruning; let the tree recover its energy. ✂️❌

🚨 Stone-dead white pines in Medfield a real hazard! 🚨

David Anderson from Mayer Tree Service spotted these brittle white pines right on a busy thoroughfare. When a tree fails, it doesn’t choose its target and that could mean power lines, cars, pedestrians, or nearby homes.

Why these trees are dangerous:
- ⚡ Could take out utility wires
- 🚗 Might fall onto passing cars or pedestrians
- 🏠 Close enough to hit structures if they collapse

Signs these pines need attention:
- 🌳 “Stone dead” no live needles
- 🪵 Very brittle wood (white pines are softer and break easily)
- 🧩 Bark falling off, visible decay

What we recommend:
- ⏳ Take them down sooner rather than later
- 🪓 Don’t attempt DIY removal near roads or power lines
- 👷♂️ Contact a professional arborist for safe removal

Hey everyone — David from Mayer Tree Service here. Stopped to film this stone-dead Scots pine at the Liberty Tree Mall. It’s literally hanging over a busy cut-through and an on-ramp — and it’s only a matter of time before something breaks off or the whole tree falls. 😬🌲

Why this matters:
- 🔥 Dead trees = brittle branches that snap easily
- 🌧️ Rot at the root makes the whole trunk vulnerable to collapse
- 🚗 Positioned over traffic = serious risk to people and vehicles

We’ve both been in arboriculture for 40+ years and we’re seeing way more dead trees lately. When a tree is dead, it’s not a mystery — it’s a hazard. If you see something like this in your yard, a neighbor’s, or a public space, don’t ignore it.

What you can do:
- 👀 Inspect from a safe distance — don’t stand under it
- 📞 Call a certified arborist for an inspection/removal

David Anderson from Mayer Tree Service here — caught this massive Japanese knotweed in bloom 🌿📹

Quick reality check:
- NOT bamboo 🎍🚫 it looks bamboo-like (hollow stems) but it’s actually a grass and incredibly invasive.
- Best time to treat: in bloom (usually September–October) this is when herbicide works best. 🧪✅
- Big stands (10–15 ft tall and deep) are hard to spray effectively. If possible, mow or cut it down in June/July so it’s only ~3 ft tall at bloom time much easier to manage ✂️🌱
- Fun fact: bees are loving the flowers 🐝 something to be mindful of when planning treatment.

Japanese knotweed in bloom 🌿🚨 David Anderson from Mayer Tree Service here (out in a cemetery in West Roxbury). We were asked to help with a nasty patch of Japanese knotweed — that incredibly invasive plant that spreads underground and pops up like grass.

Why this matters:
- It seeds and spreads fast, running along roots underground 🌱
- Can get tall and unruly if left alone — harder to treat when it’s massive
- Best time to treat: while it’s blooming (late summer → early fall) 🌸

What we did:
- Mowed it down in late spring/early summer when it was towering
- Now it’s about 3 feet tall and in bloom much more manageable and the ideal time to apply herbicide 🧴✅

What we call “houseplants” are generally those suited to warm and humid environments, and during the more extreme heat of summer, there will often be less moisture in the air than they need.

Try using a spray bottle to gently mist the plants in your home during a heat wave, which can aid them in remaining healthy and strong throughout the year.
Also remember that air conditioning, while helping you and your plants stay cool, also removes humidity from the air.

Clearly, this could leave plants dried up even away from the sun, and is another reason to give your indoor plants more water with regular misting.

We found more lanternflies all over this Olanthus. They really do look kind of pretty (if there’s such a thing 😅), but when they show up in large numbers, they’re trouble for your trees. Here’s what we saw and what to do next:
