Sounds like someone I used to know !!!
Hey, can I borrow a hundred dollars?
Sure, no problem.
Hey, about that hundred you borrowed, can I get it back?
Sudden silence. A confused look. Maybe even a fake laugh and a quick change of subject.
Sound familiar? You offer help out of kindness, and the narcissist takes it without hesitation. But when it’s time to repay you, they act like it never happened. Suddenly, you’re the unreasonable one for bringing it up. It’s a classic move—they take advantage of your generosity while twisting the situation to make themselves look innocent.
Narcissists treat money the same way they treat people: as a tool for control. Borrowing isn’t about need, it’s about testing boundaries. If you let it slide once, they’ll do it again. It’s never really about the cash—it’s about seeing what they can get away with and how far they can push you.
When they don’t pay you back, it’s not because they forgot. It’s because they feel entitled. In their mind, you owe them, not the other way around. They’ll justify it, minimize it, or guilt you for even asking.
That’s why it’s so important to notice this early on. These small “loans” reveal their true character faster than words ever could.
So, here are a few reasons narcissists never return what they borrow. And believe me, by the end, you’ll want to padlock your purse and keep it that way.
