How many countertop slabs do you actually need for a kitchen?

It sounds like it should be a simple square-footage question, but countertop layout is a little more involved than that.

A kitchen with a large island, long runs, full-height backsplash, waterfall panels, strong veining, seams, sink cutouts, or cooktop cutouts may need more material than homeowners expect. Two kitchens can have similar square footage and still require a different number of slabs because the finished pieces need to fit within the usable area of the actual stone.

That is why slab layout matters.
