Do wood cabinets limit your countertop choices?

Not nearly as much as people think.

The bigger issue is that “wood” is not one color.

Oak, maple, cherry, walnut, and other wood cabinets can all pull very different tones depending on the stain, finish, age, and lighting in the room. Even two kitchens with “oak cabinets” can look completely different.

That is why the actual cabinet door is one of the best things you can bring when looking at stone.

Put it next to the slab. If the flooring is staying, compare that too. Then look at everything in both natural light and under the lighting you use in the kitchen.

A countertop that looks perfect by itself can suddenly feel too yellow, too pink, or too cool once it is next to the cabinetry.

The goal is not to match everything exactly.

It is to make sure the materials look like they belong together.

If you are working with existing wood cabinets, bring a door or finish sample with you when you stop by the showroom. It can make narrowing down countertop options a whole lot easier.

Quartz and quartzite get confused all the time.

The names sound almost identical, but they are very different countertop materials.

Quartz is engineered, which means the pattern is generally more controlled and predictable.

Quartzite is natural stone, so the movement, veining, and color can vary from slab to slab.

That difference matters when you are choosing a countertop.

If you want a more consistent look, quartz may make sense.

If you want something natural, one-of-a-kind, and selected by the actual slab, quartzite may be the better fit.

The important thing is not just asking which one looks better.

It is understanding what you are actually buying, how it will behave in your kitchen, and what kind of care it will need.

Same-sounding names.

One of the biggest differences between natural stone and manufactured materials is that no two parts of the slab are exactly the same.

You may see lighter areas, mineral marks, changes in movement, or sections that look very different from one end of the slab to the other.

That is not necessarily a problem.

Sometimes a feature that looks small on a sample becomes much more noticeable across an island. Other times, that same feature ends up being the part of the stone that gives the finished kitchen the most character.

That is why seeing the full slab matters.

If there is an area you love, point it out.

If there is a mineral mark or section you would rather avoid, point that out too.

Those conversations are much easier to have before the slab layout is finalized.

With natural stone, variation is not something to hide.

It is part of what makes the finished countertop one of a kind.

Found a slab you love?

Before you say yes, take a minute to look at the whole thing.

A dramatic vein or unique section of stone can look incredible on an island — but depending on the layout, that same feature could end up disappearing into a sink cutout, getting interrupted by a seam, or landing somewhere you barely notice.

That is why slab selection is about more than just picking the color you like.

If there is a part of the stone that really caught your eye, point it out before fabrication. We can talk through where that feature may land and how the countertop layout could affect it.

It is also a good idea to take a photo of the slab tag and the areas you like most while you are looking.

The goal is not just to choose a beautiful slab.

It is to make sure the parts you love have a chance to show up where they will actually be seen.

Thinking about running stone up the wall instead of using a traditional tile backsplash?

It can create a really clean, continuous look — especially when the countertop and backsplash are planned together.

But once the stone goes vertical, the wall matters just as much as the counter.

Outlets, windows, upper cabinets, and other openings can all affect where pieces meet and how the finished layout looks.

You also have a design choice to make:

Do you want the movement in the slab to continue from the countertop up the wall?

Or would a quieter section of stone work better behind the cabinets and appliances?

One of the nice things about a slab backsplash is fewer grout lines, but the cuts around outlets and windows become much more noticeable — which is why planning those areas ahead of time matters.

If you are considering a full-height stone backsplash, take a few straight-on photos of the walls before you come in. It can make the layout conversation much easier.

Picking out the stone is the fun part.

But some of the smaller decisions around the sink can have a big impact on how the finished countertop comes together.

Where will the faucet sit?
Does the handle have enough room to move?
Do you want a soap dispenser or another accessory hole?
Will everything fit with the sink, disposal, and cabinet underneath?

Those details are much easier to work through before fabrication than during installation.

It is easy to get focused on the slab color and veining and forget that all of the hardware still has to fit together in one real space.

If you already have your sink and faucet picked out, bring the exact model numbers when you are planning the countertop layout. That gives us a much better picture of what needs to be accounted for before anything is cut.

A little planning up front can make the final installation go a whole lot smoother.

What actually makes a countertop look expensive?

It is not always the price of the slab.

A beautiful countertop comes together through the details — how the material fits the room, where the movement lands, how seams are placed, which edge profile is chosen, how the sink is fabricated, and how everything works with the cabinetry, backsplash, and lighting.

In fact, a more modest granite or quartz can look incredibly refined when the layout and workmanship are right. On the other hand, an expensive slab can still feel ordinary if the details are poorly planned.

Why do the cabinets need to be installed before we template your countertops?

Because the kitchen on paper and the kitchen in the room are not always exactly the same.

Walls are rarely perfectly straight, cabinet runs can shift slightly during installation, and even a small filler or cabinet adjustment can change the final countertop dimensions.

Templating is when we measure the kitchen as it actually exists — including corners, overhangs, sink placement, appliance openings, and the finished cabinet layout.

That is why the cabinets need to be secured and the sink and cooktop selections finalized before we measure. Measuring too early can create problems later, even if the original drawings were accurate.

Getting the room ready before templating helps make sure the countertops are being built for the kitchen that is actually there, not just the one that was planned.

Quartz or quartzite?

The names sound almost identical, but the materials are very different.

Quartz is manufactured, which means the pattern is generally more predictable from sample to finished countertop. Quartzite is a natural stone, so every slab is unique and the color and movement can change from one end to the other.

The better question is not just, “Which one looks nicer?”

It is how you actually use the kitchen.

Do hot pans come straight out of the oven onto the island?
Do you want a more consistent pattern?
Or do you love the idea of choosing the exact natural slab that will become your countertop?

If you are comparing quartz and quartzite, ask to see the actual slab when you are considering natural stone, and make sure you understand the care and heat recommendations for the specific product you choose.

The names may be similar.

The decision definitely is not.

Does your granite really need to be sealed every year?

Not always.

Different stones absorb moisture at different rates, and a sealer that was applied correctly may still be doing its job long after the calendar says it is “time” to reseal.

A better clue is how the countertop is actually behaving.

If water starts darkening the stone for a while, a cleaner suddenly leaves residue, or the finish looks different in one area, that gives us a lot more useful information than simply knowing when the countertop was installed.

And before grabbing a random bottle of sealer off the shelf, it is worth knowing exactly what stone and finish you have. Not every countertop should be treated the same way.
