Attempt #49 at keeping an orchid alive. 😅

This is a Phalaenopsis orchid (the most common orchid you’ll find in stores), and for some reason these plants always humble me.

I usually struggle with pests, especially mealybugs, so I started by cleaning the leaves and giving everything a good inspection before repotting.

This time I’m trying chunky coco husk instead of the original substrate. My hope is that it will hold moisture more evenly while still allowing airflow around the roots.

I also gave it a little orchid fertilizer, but I have a feeling there’s probably a better orchid care routine out there than the orchid mist I’ve been using. 😂

Orchid people: help me out.

🌿 What’s in my houseplant mix?

This is the mix I use for about 90% of my tropical houseplants.

🪵 40% Coconut Husk Chips
🥥 30% Coconut Coir
⚪ 20% Pumice
🖤 5% Horticultural Charcoal
🌱 5% Earthworm Castings

Why these ingredients?

🪵 Coconut husk chips create air pockets around roots
🥥 Coconut coir helps hold moisture
⚪ Pumice boosts aeration and drainage
🖤 Charcoal helps keep the mix fresh
🌱 Earthworm castings provide gentle nutrients

I mix a large batch in a storage bin and keep it on hand for future repots. It gives me a chunky, airy mix that works well for most of my aroids, hoyas, begonias, and other tropical houseplants.

One of my favorite things about variegated plants is that no two leaves are ever the same. 🫶🌿

This is my Alocasia Dragon Scale Mint and she’s covered in minty splashes, creamy marbling, and dark speckling, and every new leaf feels like a surprise.

Definitely a plant I stop to admire every time I walk by. 🤍

🌱 Remember those tiny begonia babies everyone was asking about?

This is exactly how I did it.

All it takes is a begonia leaf, some pumice, a humidity container, and a little patience. By cutting across the major veins and keeping the leaf in a warm, humid environment, tiny baby begonias can eventually grow directly from those cuts.

Honestly, it’s one of the coolest propagation methods in the plant world. Watching a single leaf turn into dozens of baby begonias never gets old ✨
