Being disabled is hard enough without struggling to pass through doorways, or get in the shower, or reach the cupboards. The Home Builders Foundation helps families in the Denver community with physical disabilities modify their homes so they can live more independently.

For Elijah, a broken handrail had turned a daily routine into a safety concern. Living with developmental delays, autism and a history of falls, he depends on a railing for support when using the stairs.

Thanks to HBF volunteers and supporters, the railing was securely repaired and restored, giving Elijah safer access to his home and greater confidence with every step.

As Elijah's grandmother, Peggy, shared:

May is Stroke Awareness Month, and Carol’s story reminds us that accessibility needs can change over time.

After living independently for more than 40 years following a stroke, changes in Carol’s strength and mobility made the stairs in her home increasingly difficult and dangerous to navigate.

Thanks to DL Engineering Inc., Carol now has a safe, accessible ramp that gives her greater confidence and independence at home.

This month, the HBF crew had the privilege of helping Ziar gain safer, more independent access to her home with a new wheelchair ramp.

In her application, Ziar shared that she was relying on her mother to help her get in and out of the house because of the physical complications related to cerebral palsy. With no additional support available, navigating the entrance in her wheelchair had become extremely difficult.

Now, with this new ramp in place, Ziar has greater freedom, safety, and independence each day.

Recently, HBF had the privilege of supporting Brianna and her family with critical home modifications that are making everyday life safer and more accessible.

Brianna is currently requires full-time care for all daily activities. Before the modifications, navigating her home safely was a major challenge for both Brianna and her caregivers.

Through widened doorways and new flooring in her bedroom, her family can now move her wheelchair throughout the home more safely and with fewer obstacles—helping preserve Brianna’s dignity while reducing physical strain on her caregivers.

Stories like Brianna’s remind us why accessible home modifications matter so deeply.

Over the last few weeks, a group of HBF supporters visited Rocker Distillery to begin the process of selecting a barrel for a limited-release “HBF Whiskey”.

The group toured the distillery, learned more about the barrel selection process, and sampled several bourbons as we started narrowing down flavor profiles, age, and proof for what could eventually become our very own HBF bottle.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for this first step—we’re excited to see what we create!

Last Saturday, the OrePac Building Products crew came together for another incredible Blitz Build—completing a brand-new ramp for a local family in just one day!

A huge thank you to our presenting sponsor, OrePac Building Products, for making this project possible and helping create safer, more accessible homes in our community.

Because of partners like OrePac and our amazing volunteers, we’re able to build more than just ramps—we’re building freedom

Ten years ago, Juanita suffered a stroke that changed her life forever, leaving her unable to walk without assistance. Today, even simple tasks like entering and leaving her home require support from another adult.

Recently, Juanita and her family moved into a new home, but without a ramp, safely accessing the house is nearly impossible. Her caregiver is no longer physically able to lift or assist her due to their own health limitations, making a wheelchair ramp not just helpful—but essential.

A ramp for Juanita means more than mobility—it means dignity, safety, and the ability to regain a piece of her independence.

At 38 years old, April requires 24/7 care due to Cerebral Palsy and autism. She is nonverbal, and daily routines like bathing have become increasingly difficult and physically demanding for her parents.

That’s why HBF was honored to provide April with a new handicap-accessible shower — a modification that will make a meaningful difference in both her comfort and safety, while easing the daily challenges for her household.

As her family shared, “A handicap accessible shower would be a total game changer for our household.”

Stories like April’s are a reminder that accessible home modifications don’t just change homes — they change lives.
