☀️ Memorial Day weekend is here—but is your pool actually safe to run? 🏊‍♂️💦

Today alone, our team replaced and fixed three different failed pool pump setups for three different local families just so they could safely have their pools running for the holiday weekend!
Any electrical component living outside naturally degrades, oxidizes, and builds up corrosion over time from humidity and ambient air. Take a look at the photos from today's service calls to see just how common—and dangerous—this exact failure is. 🛑 👇

🔥 What We Found & Fixed Today:
Severe Arcing & Burnt Outlets: When an outlet melts like this, it’s caused by arcing—electrical current jumping across gaps and creating intense heat. This happens when outdoor humidity corrodes the components, the internal metal "jaws" wear out and lose their grip, or the pump plug itself is corroded. Running a high-draw pump through a loose, corroded connection is a recipe for a meltdown.

ZERO GFCI Protection: On top of the burnt outlets, we caught and replaced one setup that had absolutely no GFCI protection for the pool pump. Running a pool pump next to water without a properly functioning GFCI is incredibly dangerous. We corrected that immediately to ensure the family is fully protected against shock hazards.

💡 The "Shockingly Good" Solution
Every time you pull a pool pump plug in and out of an outlet to turn it on and off, you weaken those internal jaws and expose the contacts.

To solve this, we install dedicated, weatherproof switches on all of our pool hookups. Instead of wearing out the outlet by pulling the plug, you just flip a heavy-duty switch to control your pump. Your plug stays plugged in permanently under an extra-duty weatherproof cover—keeping the connection sealed, tight, and protected.

📅 Three families caught these hazards just in time for Memorial Day. Don't wait until your pump completely quits or you melt the outlet completely.

Business Update

I want to take a moment to update everyone on scheduling for the coming weeks.

Due to an unexpected and serious medical emergency that required major surgery, I am currently focused on recovery as advised by my doctors. While this has temporarily slowed operations, I’m making steady progress and plan to get back to work as safely and responsibly as possible.

📅 Estimates will begin again in March
🔧 Service calls are expected to resume early April, pending continued recovery

I truly appreciate everyone’s patience, understanding, and support during this time. Your messages and well-wishes have meant more than I can say, and I’m looking forward to getting back out there and taking care of your electrical needs soon.

Thank you for sticking with me — I’ll keep everyone updated as things progress.

On this lovely Sunday, with temperatures at 18°, a snow squall rolling through, and your electrical service has dropped a leg… what do you do?

You call Shockingly Good Electric, of course. ⚡❄️

We temporarily repaired the existing meter socket to restore power while we built a brand-new service. Despite the bitter cold, we replaced the old 60-amp service with a 200-amp Siemens meter/main, getting this customer safely and reliably back online.

Because we’re authorized under PPL’s Fast Track program, there was no waiting on the utility—we’re permitted to make direct secondary connections, resulting in significantly faster power restoration.

When power matters most, response time matters more.

🔌 We specialize in emergency power restoration.

Another Safe and Code-Compliant Upgrade Complete in Berwick ⚡️

Today we replaced several old 60-amp cotton-insulated copper services that had long outlived their time. We upgraded them with new Milbank multi-gang meter banks and Square D 100-amp disconnects, relocating the meters 5 feet away from the gas meters to meet the latest clearance requirements.

Out back, the detached garage/apartment had what appeared to be an abandoned 60-amp SEU service — but it was still energized! We safely removed it and installed a 200-amp Siemens self-contained meter/main combo, complete with 2½" rigid conduit above the roofline. The old setup allowed someone to literally reach out from the porch and touch live connections — a serious safety hazard that’s now fully corrected.

As we were wrapping up, a PPL Electric troubleman arrived in response to a tamper alarm sent by the meter. Because Shockingly Good Electric is part of the PPL Fast Track program, we’re authorized to perform these service upgrades safely and directly. After verifying our credentials, dispatch cleared the alarm — and we were given the all-clear to finish up.

⚡ Late Night Emergency Power Restoration ⚡

We responded to an emergency call last night after PPL Electric removed a customer’s meter due to a heat alarm. Upon removal, they discovered the bottom left jaw of the meter socket had melted.

📞 Call came in at 5:00 PM
🚐 Our crew was on site by 6:30 PM

We completely removed the burned service and rebuilt it with a brand-new Siemens 135A meter base and new service riser. Two new ground rods were installed outside, and the interior panel was properly bonded to the water system.

A prior panel upgrade had been completed at this location, but unfortunately it was not code compliant. We corrected all issues and ensured the installation met the current electrical code.

This job was unique as there was concrete block behind the siding, adding complexity to the installation. We also moved the meter down to the proper height per utility specifications.

✅ Service rebuilt and ready by 1:00 AM
✅ Inspection completed by 8:30 AM
⚡ Now awaiting emergency reconnect from PPL

At Shockingly Good Electric, we’re proud to deliver safe, code-compliant, and reliable service—day or night. We specialize in emergency power restoration when you need it most.

Here we replaced a 100-amp service with a new 200-amp service through the PPL Fast Track program. This program lets us make permanent connections directly to the hot PPL secondary using the same connectors the utility uses. The result? A much shorter outage window for the customer, with no need to coordinate with the utility or wait on a truck roll.

We also upgraded the 100-amp Generac automatic transfer switch/disconnect to a 200-amp version to properly match the new 200-amp service.

Inside, we removed the old 24-space, 100-amp Cutler Hammer panel and installed a clean 42-space, 200-amp Square D QO panel—complete with a whole-home surge protection device for added peace of mind.

Now this customer is fully set for their new hot tub install from Artesian Pools & Spas—or any other load growth they may have in the future. ⚡💧

Received a Phone call at 6:30 pm on Friday night for a customer with only some of their outlets and lights working.

We did a thorough diagnosis on the properties electric system. We found the seu jacket on the meter risor completely dry rotted and well past its lifespan. The zinsco service disconnect had also failed and the one leg burned completely off on the back of the stab lok breaker. (These panels / service disconnects were recalled for this exact reason)

Installed temporary jumpers so the customer would have power throughout the night.

We came back the next day on Saturday and completely removed and rebuilt the failed service.

The customer service was completely restored by 5:30 p.m. without a PPL Utilities truck roll. If this repair was done by a non fast track electrician it would be a multi-step process of having the utility cut the power, having the hired electrician build the service, hire a certified third party electrical inspector and have them pass the electricians work and put it in the PPL system, then finally wait for PPL to come out and reconnect the drop. That could potentially be a multi-day process on the weekend.
