We had some time to kill on a job so we played around with our new Fluke iSee thermal imager. It didn't take long to see problem spots that we couldn't.

We found a 20a breaker running at 19.2a [should be 16a (80%) or less for continuous duty (3hrs or more)].

We also found a 3 ph breaker that is running one leg hotter than the other 2 legs while pulling the same amperage.

Thermal imagers are a huge help when trying to predict problems before they happen rather than react to them after they happen.

The previous electrician said their system was getting full. Rather than guessing we can know for sure using our Fluke 1734 logger. The logger measures a number of aspects (amperage, voltage, power factor, ect) of an electrical system over time.

For this project we are looking at the system for a two week period to know the impact of multiple UPSs (power factor) and system utilization (power available versus used).

With the information we gather, we can make informed decisions on facility upgrades and building power distribution, rather than poorly informed guesses.
