Today’s work was all about fire mitigation and creating defensible space. šŸŒ²šŸ”„

We removed dead and dying balsam and spruce, reduced hazardous fuel loads, and hauled all debris off-site. Every tree removed and every fuel load reduced means less opportunity for fire to spread and a safer property when conditions get tough.

Another property getting cleaned up, opened up, and better prepared for wildfire. Looking forward to getting back out there and finishing this one strong! šŸŖššŸ”„šŸ’ŖšŸ¾

One year ago, we had the privilege of standing in front of the campers at Camp Voyageur, teaching them about wildfire safety, the importance of fire mitigation, chainsaw safety, proper tree felling, and how different fuel types influence wildfire behavior. While we were there, our crew was also completing a 6-acre fuel reduction project on the property, helping make the camp more resilient to wildfire.

At the time, those lessons were about preparation. Today, they’re reality.

It’s heartbreaking to see Camp Voyageur forced to evacuate and send campers home because of the Camp Fire. No child should have to leave camp this way, and no community wants to see a place that has created so many memories threatened by wildfire.

This is exactly why fire mitigation matters. The work we do before a fire starts is often the difference between giving firefighters a chance to protect a place—or watching them fight a battle that’s already too big. Prevention isn’t glamorous, but it’s one of the most powerful tools we have.

Camp Voyageur has supported us, believed in our mission, and welcomed us to educate the next generation. Now it’s our turn to support them.

If there’s an opportunity to help in the coming days or weeks—whether through mitigation, cleanup, or whatever is needed—we’ll be there. We stand with the staff, campers, families, firefighters, and everyone impacted by this fire.

And when this fire is behind us, let’s not forget the lesson it leaves behind. Let’s invest in prevention, build more fire-resilient communities, and do the work before the next wildfire starts.

We support those who have supported us. ā¤ļøšŸ”„

Unfortunately, this season’s Session 2 was cut WAY too short due to the tough decision to evacuate Tuesday morning upon returning from the North Shore for a Day Trip to escape the record breaking heat 🄵upon arrival šŸ˜†. This was the site driving back into camp. WELY radio had an emergency interruption that the ā€œCamp Fireā€ was within 5 miles of our beloved camp and fire evacuations procedures of READY, SET, GO were already in progress leaving us Monday afternoon in READY status. Admin worked into the night Monday night/Tuesday morning after prepping staff, counselors, & campers on evacuation procedures that evening ahead of the mandated evacuations knowing the fires were going to continuously affect the planning of trips this season with the Boundary Waters closing….
Spirits have remained high and have proven the resiliency of Camp Voyageur’s legendary campers. The Camp Voyageur family did AMAZING in supporting each other in these developments and are already looking ahead to next seasonšŸ˜Ž.

🚨 Just a heads up from someone who’s been out burning in the Ely and BWCA. Even with the recent rainfall, conditions are still much drier than many people realize. With another heat wave on the way over the next couple of weeks, it won’t take long for fuels to dry out again.

Please use extra caution with campfires, debris piles, and any open flame. It only takes one escaped fire to change someone’s life forever.

Now is one of the best times to get wildfire mitigation completed before we head into Minnesota’s fall fire season. Reducing hazardous fuels around your home today can make a significant difference when fire danger increases again.

If you’re looking for professional wildfire mitigation, I’d be happy to help. With over 10 years of experience in both wildfire suppression and fire prevention, I specialize in creating practical, property-specific solutions that help protect homes, cabins, and land.
