Winter doesn't have to mean a bare landscape. Part of our design process is thinking ahead to every season, not just the one you're planting in. Here are five plants we come back to again and again for winter structure and color, and why they earn a spot in our designs.

Paper bark birches: The peeling, papery bark catches the light beautifully against snow and adds vertical interest when everything else has gone quiet.

Dogwood, yellow or red twig: We love these for the vibrant stem color. It's one of the easiest ways to bring a hit of color into a winter bed.

Hydrangeas: Left unclipped through fall, the dried flower heads hold their shape and add texture right through winter.

Ornamental grasses: As long as heavy snow doesn't weigh them down, their movement and texture carry a design through the coldest months.

Perennials like sedum and astilbe: Skip the fall cutback and their seed heads and structure become part of the winter scene.

This is the kind of planning that goes into every design we build: choosing plants that pull their weight in every season, not just the one you're picturing when you plant them.
