Catching you up on the fire rebuild.

The last two or three weeks haven't been on video much. I've been buried in site prep for a few big jobs coming up: estimating, contracts, permitting, grades and elevations. Meanwhile the crew has been doing outstanding work out here.

The wall behind me looks back into the arena. It gets a 2x6 wall, insulated, to separate what will be an ADU from the barn side, and it has to meet fire code. The tack room below was lost in the fire.

Next goal: roof on, paper on, metal on. Get it dry so we can build out the inside right for our customer.

The stairs on the plans didn't fit. Not even close.

The architect had them running up right over a beam we need for the dormer framing. These stairs need about 140 inches of run plus a 3-foot landing, and we had roughly 12 feet to work with.

The homeowner told us the old stairs used to run the other way. Turning them parallel with the joists gave us plenty of run and a full landing at the bottom.

Part 2 is about something more serious. Taking over someone else's job, we found holes in the deck that had been papered over with no plywood underneath. That exact shortcut is how a serious accident happened on this property before we came on. So we're finding every one and fixing it before anyone steps there.

A whole pile of 2x8s came out of this floor. Here's why.

The plans showed 2x8 floor joists front and back. When we finally got the engineer on the phone, he said the whole floor was supposed to be 2x10.

Going to 2x10 also gives the insulation crew the depth they need to insulate this floor to current code.

So we pulled every 2x8, swapped in 2x10s, and kept moving. When the plans and the calcs don't match, you stop and get the answer before you build on top of it.

**What happens when a construction project sits for two years before another crew takes over?**

In this video, I’m showing one of the challenges we found while coming in to finish a job that had been left by the previous contractor.

One of the pressure-treated posts had twisted and was out of alignment. Now, it’s our responsibility to figure out the right solution or determine whether the post needs to be replaced altogether.

We’re also working through how the porch roof will tie into the new main roof while making sure everything meets code.

The lesson? Finishing someone else’s work takes more than picking up where they left off. It means inspecting what’s there, identifying problems, consulting with the engineer when needed, and finding a solution that makes the structure right.

That’s part of the job: solve the problem, do it properly, and build it to last.

We’re back on this rebuild project, and there’s a lot going on behind the scenes.

This building started as a combination of a pole building and conventional frame construction before a fire changed everything. Now, we’re stepping in to finish the project and deal with everything we’re finding along the way.

There’s a lot to figure out, so we’re going to take you along with us through a series of short videos, showing what we’re working on, what we’re dealing with, and what it takes to get this project finished.

Follow along. There’s plenty more to come.

Hard work, focus, and getting the details right from the ground up.

Some projects have more history behind them than others.

This barn was severely damaged by a fire a few years ago, resulting in a devastating loss for the family. We were originally involved with this project in 2023, but after another contractor was hired, the project was left unfinished.

Now, we’re back to rebuild this section and get it finished.

This is just the before. We’ll take you along as the project progresses and show you how we bring it back together, step by step.
