3 years ago we purchased 40 acres to be able to grow more nursery stock. I was told there was a cemetery on the property, but had trouble locating it. The farm had been neglected and had grown over very badly. Its just now been cleaned up where we can start restoring it. The cemetery has definitely been neglected for 150 years. Most headstones had been moved or buried over time. The first step was to lay the cemetery off in grids and start taking layers of topsoil off, inch by inch. This has allowed us to find headstones and basis, and to match them up. The only records available for this cemetery was just the name. Garrard Cemetery. Named after Dr.James Douglas Garrard the 3rd. He was originally from Bourbon County Kentucky, and was related to the 2nd Governor of Kentucky. His date of death was 1858. The restoration project will be a long but rewarding one. Maybe you've seen it growing everywhere, but you never knew its story... 🌿

Known as purple deadnettle, this common "w**d" has a long history in traditional folk remedies and is often foraged for teas and salads in early spring. Most people just mow right over it.

The mulberry tree did eight jobs at once. They pulled it from nursery catalogs because it drops fruit on concrete.

WHITE MULBERRY , drought-hardy colonial relic, now wild everywhere because silk farms failed but trees survived.
RED MULBERRY , native eastern US species, single tree drops enough fruit to feed hogs for a month.
BLACK MULBERRY , oldest cultivated species, peak flavor, bruises in hours, so it never survived industrial shipping.
LIVESTOCK FODDER , leaves dried as winter hay, fallen fruit fattened pigs and chickens with zero purchased feed.
SILKWORM HOST , the entire Western silk industry depended on Morus alba; the trees outlasted every failed venture.
LEAF AS FOOD , young leaves eaten or dried to tea across East Asia and the Ottoman Empire for two thousand years.
ROOT BARK MEDICINE , documented in Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Unani pharmacopoeias long before pharmaceutical chemistry existed.
FRUIT PRESERVATION , sun-dries in three days, cooks to thick syrup without sugar, ferments without added yeast.

This tree was not a specialty crop. It was infrastructure. Every serious farmstead from Persia to Appalachia kept at least one because losing it meant losing a link in the feed chain, the medicine chest, and the preservation larder simultaneously.

What replaced it was nothing. Nurseries quietly dropped mulberry to avoid complaints from suburban customers who did not want purple stains on their driveways. A tree that fed civilizations for four thousand years lost its catalog slot to aesthetics.

Plant one. It asks for almost nothing and returns almost everything.

Busy week, but very productive. We installed this irrigation area to hold our grasses. This area will hold approximately 3500 plants. We had to transplant 80 large plants from this area to another field, dig a 650 ft trench for an electric line for the solenoid valves, move a light pole, run water lines, and move plants.
