We’re saddened by the passing of Larry Ockelmann, a dear friend and former remodeling consultant who was part of Team Stebnitz in the late ’90s and early 2000s.
Larry brought years of experience from his career as a vice president in Sears’ home improvement division. But what I remember most is his smile, his laugh, and the way he treated people.
He taught me a great deal about leadership simply by being himself. Larry loved building relationships—with our clients, our trade partners, and everyone he worked alongside. When a challenge came up, his response was usually, “We’ll find a way,” or “Don’t worry about it so much. It’ll be fine.”
That easygoing outlook came with real wisdom. Larry helped me look beyond the frustration of the moment, understand what mattered underneath, and remember that how we treat people matters long after a problem is solved.
He also had sayings that still make me smile—and make more sense with each passing year. One favorite: “Percentages don’t buy groceries; dollars do.”
This photo is from the retirement party we held for Larry. It brings back wonderful memories of someone whose influence continued long after his time with our company.
Larry, thank you for your friendship, your humor, and the lessons you shared. The wisdom you passed along, personally and professionally, will stay with me forever.
You will be missed and never forgotten. Our hearts are with your family and everyone who loves you.
