Meteorologist Matt Rudkin just shared this update about the potential for severe weather tonight, including damaging winds and large hail.

When storms like this move through, most people are watching the sky…

But what many homeowners don’t realize is that wind and hail are the two biggest causes of roof damage — and a lot of that damage isn’t obvious from the ground.

TUESDAY NIGHT STORM SETUP: Alright... a bit of a lengthy post. Let me start with this: take a breath. I know anxiety is sky high after the Michigan tornadoes last week, and social media can be overwhelming with random pages saying the end of the world is coming. It's not. This is late winter/early spring in the Midwest. If you're on this page & my app, you're ahead of the game by being prepared. So kudos to you! :)

A warm front moves into the area Tuesday night. As it does, it will help pop t'storms. When warm fronts are involved, you can get some extra wind shear/twisting in the atmosphere, hence the higher than average tornado risk. Also, in the winter, it is much easier to produce large hail.

Storms will develop in IL after sunset and move into our area after 8pm EDT. Storms that bubble up on their own have the highest chance of tornadoes & hail. As they gel into a line, those threats go down a bit, but then straight line wind threat increases. Most of this all happens between 8p-2a EDT Tuesday night.

I do want to say that I've seen setups that are FAR more concerning. It is not out of the question that storms aren't too significant. The big "if" is sunshine on Tuesday. The more sun here & IL, the better chance for bad weather. The more clouds, the better chance for a "bust"... meaning not much happening. However... I like to prepare for some nasty weather, and be pleasantly surprised when it doesn't happen. :)
