Mathews Excavating & Septic Mathews Excavating & Septic specializes in septic system installation, repairs, troubleshooting and inspections.

We also specialize in excavation and dirt work, such as barn pads, foundations, water/utility trenching, and driveways. Mathews Excavating & Septic was founded in 2018 in Kiowa, Colorado. We are committed to providing our customers the best possible experience. We are from Elbert County, and treat every customer like a friend we might run into at the local grocery store or gas station (because it is almost inevitable that we will!). Our goal is to create a network of customers in the Elbert County and Tri-County areas that can count on us for any dirt or septic project that arises. Mathews Excavating & Septic is a fully insured and licensed company. GOOD PEOPLE. GREAT CAUSE. STRONGER COMMUNITY. We spend our days digging in the dirt, but last week, we took a day off to support the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office and its Victims Assistance Unit, an important resource for crime victims in our community.

We’ve proudly supported our local Sheriff’s Office for years and this was another opportunity to give back to an organization doing important work right here at home.

A FAILED SEPTIC SYSTEM STOPPED THE SALE. A home in Deer Trail, CO needed more than a quick fix before it could change hands.

The existing septic system failed its Use-Permit inspection, requiring a complete tank and leach field replacement before the sale could move forward.

We installed a new Anderson Precast concrete tank and worked with Colorado Geoscience and Design on a new leach field designed specifically for the property’s soil conditions.

Different soil requires different solutions. This system was designed around what was actually in the ground—not a one-size-fits-all approach.

ROME WASN’T BUILT IN A DAY. THIS SEPTIC SYSTEM WAS.

This septic system was installed to allow the property owner to hook up their camper directly to the system designed for their future dream home. That means they can stay on their property, monitor progress, and save money while construction moves forward.

Our team pushed to finish the entire installation in a single day to minimize the amount of time the system was left “open.” With impending weather and the possibility of cattle on the property, we brought out the whole crew and started before the sun rose.

We were confident we could start and finish the installation in one day because we have the experience and expertise to make it happen.

LOOK AT THE HOLE. Most people would probably look at this and think, “It’s just a hole.” But when you're replacing a septic tank, there’s a lot more going on than simply digging.

QUALITY YOU CAN STILL SEE 30 YEARS LATER. This septic replacement uncovered a piece of our family’s excavation history—and workmanship that still held up after three decades.

After 30 years of hard-water exposure in Sun Country, the tank’s concrete had deteriorated enough to fail the septic Use Permit Inspection. While reviewing the septic installation records as part of our due diligence, we discovered the original tank had been installed by DM Construction, our late father’s excavation company.
During the installation of the replacement tank, we found all the existing components to be expertly installed – all pipes at perfect slope, joints securely fastened, and tank perfectly level.

We take great pride in carrying forward our family’s long-standing tradition of quality workmanship.

THE SILENT TREATMENT. Your septic system won't call, text, or leave a note. It just quietly does its job... until one day it doesn't, and suddenly your whole yard smells like a decision you regret.

A gravity-fed septic system less than five years old experienced premature leach field failure at this County Road 77 property.

We investigated the system to determine what was causing the early failure and discovered that the residence's water softener was purge-cycling more frequently than normal, sending excessive volumes of high-salinity discharge into the septic system. This contributed to conditions that overwhelmed the existing leach field.

To address the underlying issue, Mathews partnered with N2IT Plumbing and Drain Cleaning Inc. to reroute the water softener discharge line so it could daylight into a designated rock drainage area rather than discharge into the septic system.

We then removed the failed leach field and installed a replacement pressurized bed system designed by Colorado Geoscience & Design.

As an additional safeguard, we installed an overflow pipe in the new pump tank. This gives the property owner the ability to discontinue the pump cycle in the future and redirect flow back toward the original field if conditions allow.

The goal wasn't simply to replace a failed field—it was to identify why it failed prematurely and address the contributing issue so the replacement system has a better chance of performing as designed.
