Fun Fact Friday!

The act of retaining leaves throughout the dormant season is known as marcescense. Oak trees commonly practice this adaptive behavior. No one quite knows why they decide not to drop their leaves until spring but there are several theories.

One theory is that by retaining dead leaves, the tree can protect its vulnerable buds from drying winds and extreme cold or frost damage. Another theory involves providing an unpalatable leaf to deter animals from browsing on the twigs during the harsh winter season. The rustling of the leaves in the wind potentially scares animals away as well. The last theory speculates that shedding leaves in the early spring gives the tree a nutrient boost that is otherwise washed away during winter precipitation and snowmelt.

This phenomenon is also considered an ecological anachronism. This means that this trait coevolved over time with a predator that is now extinct leading to this trait being no longer necessary.

Mature oak trees are extremely important for the urban ecosystem. Their twigs, bark, cavities, leaves, and acorns provide shelter and food for thousands of insect species and other wildlife (birds, bats, racoons!). Of course they provide many environmental and property benefits as well such as increasing the value of your property, providing shade, stormwater and erosion control, and carbon sequestration.

All of these reasons can add up to homeowners wanting to preserve these monoliths. This specific tree had the deadwood removed and had a root growth hormone injected into the soil around it to keep it healthy.

Contact Tree Savvy (715-797-5641) today for questions about mature trees on your urban landscape or if you want to plant an oak tree for the generations to come to enjoy!
