Remembering: Benjamin “Smokey” Wilcox
Smokey was a beloved son, father, husband, brother, and friend. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also had a knack for finding “good deals” and collecting things. We laugh because he could fix anything the “Wilcox” way. It may not have looked OSHA approved but it would work great.
Smokey is the guy that everyone knew they could count on. He’s known for stopping on the side of the road to change a tire, buying milk for someone in line behind him at the store, or evenfix an air conditioner for someone who was down on their luck and give them a hug instead of a bill. He had a knack for bartering too. These are just a few of the stories that have been shared about Smokey since his passing.
Many times, Smokey could be seen on the side of the road picking pears or blackberries because he couldn’t stand the thought of them not being picked and eaten. However, his favorite treat was his mom’s pecan pie. There may have been a few family squabbles on where the pie went when Smokey was around.
He never met a stranger and always had a way connecting with folks. He loved his people and most importantly, he loved Jesus. Our family cherishes every memory we have of Smokey. We love to hear the stories of how he impacted someone’s life and to see the pictures/videos that captured his hazel eyes and hisdistinguishable smirk. He may be gone from our world physically but his spirit is forever present.
