Dieciseis de Septiembre (September Sixteenth) commemorates the day in 1810 when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest more commonly referred to as Father Hidalgo, called for independence from Spain. He made a moving and ground breaking speech, "the Grito de Dolores" in the Mexican town of Dolores that sparked hope in the people and marked the beginning of an 11 year war of independence that ended with Mexico gaining its freedom after 3 centuries under colonial rule.

Twenty years ago this morning, time stood still and yet seemed to stretch into eternity at the same time. Some lived their final moments, while others lived through a moment that forever changed the world. A moment so tragically etched into the fabric of our lives, that two decades later, if asked what you were doing on that fateful day, the memory would be brought to the forefront as if it was yesterday. Our nation felt grief, loss, and fear, on a scale unfamiliar to our generation, but something else was also born that day. A defiant strength spread throughout America as we came together, a unified voice of hope and perseverance drowning out the hateful roar of terrorism. Today and always we honor the memory of all those who perished in the attacks, the first responders who saved lives while losing their own, and all the military personnel who sacrificed their lives defending our freedom in the war that ensued. We will never forget.
