THAT WHISTLE FROM YOUR VENTS IS TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING

A whistling or whooshing sound from your vents is not just a quirk. It usually means air is being forced through a space that is too tight, and your system is working harder than it should.

The most common cause is restricted airflow. A clogged filter is the usual suspect, choking the air your system is trying to move. Closed or blocked vents, undersized ductwork, or leaks and gaps in the duct connections can all create the same strain and the same noise.

Why does it matter? When your system has to fight for air, it runs longer, wears faster, and drives your energy bill up. That whistle is often the first sign of a problem you can fix cheaply now or pay for later.

Start by checking your filter. If a fresh one does not quiet things down, the issue is deeper in the ductwork, and that is where we come in.

Hearing something you cannot explain? We will track it down and make it right.

Your furnace shouldn't suddenly develop a new soundtrack. 👀

Banging. Rattling. Squealing. Scraping.

A new or unusual sound is your heating system's way of telling you something has changed. It could be something relatively simple, or a sign that a component needs attention.

Either way, turning up the TV won't fix it. 😉

If your furnace is making noises you haven't heard before, call B&W so we can track down the cause.

The Work Starts Before We Ever Reach Your Home

That is one of our own, B&W cap and all, prepping a unit in our shop before it ever heads to a job. A lot of what makes an install go smoothly happens right here, out of sight, long before we pull into your driveway.

Taking the time to build and check equipment in the shop means fewer surprises at your home, a cleaner install, and a system that is set up right the first time. It is the kind of attention to detail that does not show up in a quote, but you feel it for years in how well everything runs.

This is how we have done it for a long time, and it is why folks around Edwardsville and the Metro East keep calling us back. We genuinely care about getting it right, not just getting it done.

Heading into winter and want a team that sweats the details? We would be glad to help.

CAN TWO THERMOSTATS ACTUALLY FIGHT EACH OTHER? SOMETIMES, YES

If your home has two thermostats, you may have noticed one part of the house running warm while another runs cold, with your system seemingly working against itself. It is a real thing, and it comes down to how your home is zoned.

In a properly set up two zone system, each thermostat controls its own area through dampers in the ductwork, and they work together. The trouble starts when the zones are not set up right, the dampers fail, or two thermostats are controlling overlapping space. Then one calls for heat while the other calls for cooling, or they trade off in a way that leaves nobody comfortable and your energy bill climbing.

Mismatched settings between the two are a common and simple culprit. But if you have ruled that out and the house still cannot find a balance, the zoning system itself needs a look.
Two thermostats should mean better comfort, not a daily standoff.

Caught in a thermostat tug of war? We will get your zones working in sync.

A NEW FURNACE, AND A FOUND CAT, ALL IN A DAY

Some days the job is bigger than the furnace. Kayti’s 40 year old unit had finally run its course, so Shawn and Brad swapped in a brand new one, took their time to do it properly, and walked her through everything before they left.

Then came the part that made our day. When Kayti thought her cat had slipped out an open door mid install, Shawn helped her search. Zelda turned up safe in the basement twenty minutes later, hiding the whole time.

That is the kind of team we are proud to have. People who treat your home, and everyone in it, with a little extra care. A 40 year run is a good life for a furnace, and we are glad to set Kayti up for the next few decades of comfort.

Thank you for the kind words, Kayti, and give Zelda a scratch from us.

Your thermostat gets all the attention, but there's another part of your HVAC system doing a lot of the heavy lifting behind the scenes.

Your air handler helps move conditioned air throughout your home. If it isn't working properly, you may notice weak airflow, inconsistent temperatures, unusual noises, or a system that runs longer than it should.

It's one of those HVAC components you probably don't think about until something isn't working.

B&W provides air handler service to help keep the air moving and your home comfortable.

What does it mean when my vents whistle or make noise?

A whistling vent is air telling you it's being forced through an opening that's too small for it.

Most of the time the cause is restriction somewhere upstream. A filter that's overdue, closed or blocked registers, or a filter with a higher rating than your system can pull through. The blower still tries to move the same volume of air, so it speeds up through whatever openings are left, and that's the whistle you hear.

Undersized or crushed ductwork does the same thing, and so does a return that's too small for the system.

It matters because that noise is a symptom of strain. Restricted airflow raises pressure in the system, makes the blower work harder, and in cooling season it can freeze the coil.

Other sounds mean other things. Popping or ticking in the ducts is usually metal expanding, which is normal. A rattle is often a loose register.

If your vents have started whistling, start with the filter, then call us at (618) 254-0645.

New furnace in, and our name is on the front of it.

That sticker isn't decoration. Years from now, when someone needs service and can't remember who installed the equipment, it's right there on the cabinet with the number to call. Every system we install gets one.

A couple of things worth noticing in this one. The flue is properly supported and pitched where it leaves the unit, and the gas and condensate lines are run so a technician can reach everything without pulling the furnace out. That matters in a basement like this, where the equipment shares space with shelving and storage.

If you don't know who installed yours or when, look for a sticker on the cabinet and check the label for the model and serial number. That's the start of knowing what you own.

What paperwork should I keep after a new install?

Keep it all, and keep it somewhere you'll find it in five years. Here's what matters and why.

The invoice is your proof of purchase, and it's what most manufacturer warranties require before they'll honor a claim. Without it, you may be paying for a part that should have been covered.

Your warranty registration is the one people miss. Many manufacturers require registration within a set window after installation, often 60 to 90 days, or the coverage drops to a shorter term. Confirm it was done, and keep the confirmation.

Also worth keeping: the model and serial numbers of the equipment, the permit and inspection paperwork if one was pulled, and your maintenance records, since some warranties expect proof the system has been serviced.

A photo of all of it on your phone takes two minutes and saves a lot later.

Before and after pictures are standard on our duct cleaning jobs, and there's a reason for that.

Duct cleaning is work you can't see while it's happening and can't inspect afterward. The ducts go back together and the house looks the same either way. Showing you what came out is how you know what you paid for.

Shawn and Brian handled this one. Thank you for the kind words, Ron.

Wondering whether your ducts actually need it? We'll tell you honestly, and show you either way. Call us at (618) 254-0645.
