From the street this pin oak looked fine. Green leaves, full canopy, shading most of Heather's house in Belleville.

The evidence was all at the bottom. Mushrooms were growing straight out of the trunk, and there was an open hole where the trunk meets the ground. That is what advanced decay looks like from the outside.

Ethan, Nathan and Alex are running it Monday. 90 feet tall, 59 inches through the trunk, with the power line passing right through the canopy. Ameren dropped the service first.

Not every big tree over a house has to come out.

This river birch in Lebanon had grown into the overhead line, across the pergola, and up against the siding. Adam, Nathan and Gavin lifted the lower branches instead of removing the tree. They cleared about four feet above the line and pulled the canopy back off the roof. Then they took out the dead wood underneath. A cherry in the same yard had its diseased limbs cut out the same afternoon.

Getting in was the hard part. A double gate was the only way to the back yard, and the garden is full of hosta beds. The 92-foot lift tracked through, set up on the lawn, and reached the whole tree from one spot.

A week ago a large leader tore out of the top of this 80 foot pin oak in Alton and came down on the pool and the deck below it. We cleared that damage, but our arborist found more broken limbs still hung up in what was left standing, so the rest of the tree had to come out. Today Ethan, Luke and Alex flew the remaining trunk out in sections with the grapple saw while a climber worked the 92 foot lift, lifting every piece up and away from the pool instead of dropping it in the yard.

Four trees and a stump, one day in Edwardsville.

Adam and Ethan brought a sugar maple down in sections with the grapple saw on the boom and a climber working from the spider lift, cut the stump low, and had every piece of debris off the property before they pulled out. The red oak, the pin oak and the second sugar maple stayed right where they were and had deadwood pruned out instead, limbs three inches and larger. Then they ground out an old stump at the street, 28 inches across, six to eight inches below grade and flush with the lawn.

One removal, three prunings, one stump. That is a normal Monday.

A pin oak standing bare in the middle of August is telling you something. That one sat on the corner of the Lincoln school lot in Edwardsville with all of its canopy over the parking area and the sidewalk, so Ethan and Alex took it down Friday morning with the grapple saw, cut the stump low, and had the debris gone the same day. It was one stop on a bigger list: four dead ash off the campus, and deadwood cleared out of the black oaks, pin oaks and maples that are staying. All of it has to be finished before students come back on the 16th.

Eighty feet of pin oak, thirty inches through the trunk, half of it hanging over the house. Here is the whole removal at Ari's place in Wood River in about thirty seconds. Ethan, Alex, Nathan, and Elijah worked it from two sides with the spider lift and the grapple saw, flying every section out over open ground instead of dropping it in the yard.

An 80 foot sweetgum, 40 inches across, in a fenced Collinsville backyard with eight feet of access. Nearly half its canopy hung over the house and the fence line. Adam, Ethan, Nathan, and Elijah took out a fence panel, set up on the open ground beside the property, and lifted the tree out in sections over the top instead of dragging it through the yard. Same visit they raised the canopy on Brandon's big white ash out front and cleared the honeysuckle along the back line.

Silver maples grow fast and shed deadwood even faster, and the two big ones at Siobhan's Edwardsville home were due for attention. Adam, Luke, and Aaron spent yesterday morning in the ropes, raising the lower canopy on one and easing the tallest stems back off the deck on the other, then hauled away every branch. No storm, no drama, just careful cuts that keep good trees standing for decades. Free estimates → arbor-mgmt.com

Some storm damage comes with a puzzle. At Kathleen's place in Belleville, a huge sweet gum limb failed onto the roof, fence, and patio, and a storm-wrecked cedar was resting against the house directly in the way. Ethan, Alex, and Ian took the cedar out first, then lifted the sweet gum limb off in controlled sections with the grapple saw and 92 foot lift, tarping the roof before they rolled out. One day after the call, Anjanette's Belleville home was clear. A storm cracked two big limbs out of her 50 foot silver maple and left them resting on the roof, with the limb above torn out so badly it had to come down before anyone could work safely underneath. Adam, Ethan, and Nathan lifted everything off in sections with the 50 ton knuckle crane and 92 foot spider lift, then tarped the damaged roof to keep the weather out until repairs, and we worked directly with her insurance claim the whole way.
