Elizabeth's pin oak in Edwardsville stood 70 feet tall, with every branch over her house or the street. The bark was coming off at the base, and the tree had started dropping more branches than usual. On Monday, Ethan, Ian and Adam took it down with the grapple saw, lifting each piece up and away from the house. Elizabeth kept a tall stump, and it is going to be carved into a sculpture. 🌳

Robert has 16 white pines on his property in Edwardsville, and their lower branches were sweeping the ground. Alex, Nathan and Gavin lifted the first four in September. On Wednesday, Adam, Alex and Aaron finished the other 12. They raised the lower branches 6 to 8 feet and pulled out the young volunteer trees growing underneath. Robert keeps every pine, and now there is open ground and a clear view under all 16 of them.

A lightning strike badly damaged an 80 foot white oak in Tom's back yard in Highland. He had a list of repairs to make after that storm, and the tree had to come first. Ethan, Ian and Nathan took it down with the grapple saw. While the crew was there, Tom had us remove the 75 foot white oak beside it too. The only way in was a 15 foot path through the empty lot next door. They laid plywood over the lawn and its sprinkler lines. Nothing that size stands over Tom's fence line anymore, and he can get on with the rest of his repairs.

Deena and Derek's pool in Belleville has nothing standing over it anymore. Two cottonwoods, 85 feet each and 30 inches through the trunk, came down Monday after one had already dropped a limb on the garden shed. Ethan, Aaron, Ian and Nathan pulled the fence panels out and laid a plywood road across the lawn to get the truck in. They are back Tuesday for a box elder, the brush, and the fence rebuild.

A tulip poplar in Belleville had split where its two main stems join, with both stems leaning out over a house and a power line. Adam, Ethan, Gavin and Luke shortened it Tuesday instead of removing it, cutting both stems back to about 15 feet above the split. Ross and Connie keep their tree, and the crack is carrying far less weight than it was that morning. All three power lines went back up the same day.

This is what emerald ash borer looks like from the inside. 🌳

Trent found this ash in a Belleville yard last week. The bark had already fallen off the trunk, and the wood underneath was covered in winding tunnels. Those are the tracks of the larvae. They hatch on the outside of the bark and tunnel in. For about a year they eat the thin living layer that moves water and food up and down the trunk. Once those tunnels wrap the whole trunk, nothing gets past, and the tree starves. Tilt the camera up at the end of the clip and you can see how it finishes. That tree is standing bare in September while everything around it is still green.

Here is what to look for on your own ash, roughly in the order it shows up.

The top thins out first. Dead branches start at the very top of the canopy and work down.

Pale patches appear on the trunk. Woodpeckers strip the outer bark off to get at the larvae underneath, and it leaves the bark looking blonde.

Sprouts push straight out of the trunk and out of the base. That is the tree trying to grow below the damage.

The bark splits. Underneath you find these tunnels, and small D shaped exit holes about an eighth of an inch across.

Timing is the whole thing with ash. Caught early enough, a tree can often be treated and kept. Once it looks like the one in this video, that window has closed, and it needs to come down before the wood turns brittle. A dead ash is one of the more dangerous trees to take apart, and it does not get cheaper or safer the longer it stands.

Adam, Luke and Aaron spent Monday on the Lewis and Clark Community College campus in Godfrey. They took down a sweet gum that stood beside one of the historic stone halls. The trunk was hollow and there were sidewalks running underneath it, so nothing got dropped. A climber worked out of the 92 foot lift and lowered every piece down on ropes. The bare trunk was the only part they let fall. This was just one of the 27 jobs we've done on this campus over the last nine years, and the crew is back Tuesday to finish the list.

From the street this pin oak looked fine. Green leaves, full canopy, shading most of Heather's house in Belleville.

The evidence was all at the bottom. Mushrooms were growing straight out of the trunk, and there was an open hole where the trunk meets the ground. That is what advanced decay looks like from the outside.

Ethan, Nathan and Alex are running it Monday. 90 feet tall, 59 inches through the trunk, with the power line passing right through the canopy. Ameren dropped the service first.
