This Edmonds waterfront project began as a vision for a large addition and attached garage and evolved into a substantial partial rebuild of the existing home. The reimagined main floor was designed as an open, light-filled great room organized around a large kitchen and generous entertaining spaces. Expansive glass doors and a dramatic wall of windows frame views of the Puget Sound, creating a seamless indoor–outdoor connection and allowing natural light to fill the interior. Sustainability and efficiency were also central goals: the existing foundation and main floor system were salvaged and reused, while rebuilt walls support a modern double shed roofline constructed with SIP panels (Structurally Insulated Panels) over exposed wood beams.

The main floor was completely reconfigured to improve circulation and enhance the functionality of main living areas. The design for H2D's Whidbey High Performance Compact project on a wooded Whidbey Island property centered on building lightly on the land while creating a high-performance, compact home tailored to a family of two. The primary goal was to minimize the footprint and preserve as many existing trees as possible, limiting site disturbance to only what was necessary. This approach allowed the project to support long-term energy goals while preserving the character and canopy of the site.

Imagine having a private retreat for your family and friends. That's exactly what the homeowners of H2D's Whidby Family Camp Project wanted to create.

The design centers on a main cabin that serves as the heart of the camp. Complementing the main cabin, two smaller cabins were designed with two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a small entry area each. These secondary cabins, or “detached bedrooms,” offer private retreat spaces for family and guests to rest and enjoy quiet time, while encouraging interaction in the main cabin or surrounding outdoor gathering areas.
