We asked our team to share their favorite plant to work with or recommend in landscape designs, and our intern, Angel, chose the majestic Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora)!

Angel sees these beautiful trees every day on the OSU campus and loves their massive, creamy-white flowers that fill the air with a sweet, lemony fragrance.

Why we love using Southern Magnolias in our designs:
🌳 Provides dense, year-round shade and shelter for wildlife
🌱 Strong root systems help stabilize soil and reduce erosion
🐝 Large, fragrant blooms provide nectar for pollinators, especially bees
🐦 Bright red seeds provide food for birds, squirrels, turkeys, and other small mammals

Planting a Southern Magnolia is more than adding beauty to your landscape... it's an investment in healthier green spaces, stronger biodiversity, and a thriving local ecosystem.

Every great landscape starts with a vision—and a little heavy lifting.

Today we're positioning the natural stone that will become the centerpiece of this custom "Zen garden". Once complete, this boulder will be transformed into a tranquil bubbling water feature, bringing the relaxing sound of flowing water to the space.

Designed as the focal point of the landscape, the water feature and Zen garden are intentionally positioned to be enjoyed from the home's interior, creating a peaceful view from inside as well as out.

Stay tuned for updates as this peaceful backyard retreat comes to life! 🌿💧

🌿 Staff Pick: Vitex (Chaste Tree) 🌿

We’re kicking off a new monthly series where our team shares favorite plants they love using in landscape designs — and first up is our graphic designer, Velvet, with one of her current favorites: the beautiful, low maintenance and hardworking Vitex.

If you’ve ever seen one blooming in summer, you know why it stands out. Vitex bursts with tall spikes of fragrant purple-blue flowers that bees, butterflies, and pollinators absolutely love. It is also drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun.

“It’s one of those plants that gives you big impact without demanding constant attention,” Velvet says. “Once established, it just keeps performing year after year and I love seeing all the happy bees and butterflies.”

Before the finishing touches go in a project, the grade-work is critical for proper drainage. Drainage swales and creek-beds can not only be functional but aesthetically pleasing. Proper drainage planning today helps prevent costly problems down the road.

One of our latest projects currently in development includes this rock-lined drainage swale (dry creek bed) and boulder wall, designed to manage storm-water runoff, reduce erosion, and help protect the property from water damage. We're excited to see this project continue to take shape. Function and aesthetics working together. ✨

🌍 Happy World Environment Day, Oklahoma! 🌿
This year’s theme — “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” — reminds us that the solutions to our biggest challenges are all around us in the landscapes we call home.

Here in Oklahoma, landscape designers/architects are designing resilient, beautiful spaces that work with our unique environment instead of against it. Our native Oklahoma plants ( little bluestem, Indiangrass, coneflowers, and redbuds) thrive in our variable climate, support pollinators, and need far less water.

From Oklahoma City’s urban green spaces to Tulsa’s riverfront revitalization and rural pollinator habitats, thoughtful landscape design is one of our most powerful tools for fighting climate change while celebrating what makes our state special.

Partner with a design professional and capitalize on the inspiration of Oklahoma’s prairies, rivers, and wide-open skies — and build a greener future together.

Modern design flows with natural prairie. Here is a work in progress as we are still implementing layers of the design.

One of the standout features of this project is the large-format concrete paver patio with artificial turf inlays. This contemporary grid pattern creates a clean, architectural look while helping define the outdoor living space.

Benefits of this style include:
• A sleek, modern aesthetic
• Durable, low-maintenance surfaces
• Improved drainage between pavers
• Open layout/configuration to allow for maximum maneuverability throughout the space
