MYTH: A little septic smell is just part of owning a septic system.

FACT: A healthy septic system shouldn’t regularly smell! If you’re noticing unpleasant odors in or around your home, your system could be telling you that something needs attention.

Before cooking grease ever reaches your drain, try the coffee-can trick.

Pour cooled cooking grease into an empty can, let it harden, and toss it in the trash. Grease that goes down the drain can solidify in your pipes, contribute to clogs, and create problems for your septic system.

MYTH: Fall leaves piling up over your septic system don’t matter, right? Not necessarily!

A thick layer of leaves and debris over your drain field can trap moisture and interfere with proper drainage. Over time, this can prevent your system from working as efficiently as it should.

Halloween fun can mean extra guests, more water use, and plenty of treats, but don’t let it turn into a scary septic problem!

Keep candy wrappers and other non-biodegradables out of drains, throw pumpkin guts and grease in the trash, and spread out laundry and showers when guests visit.

A few simple precautions can help protect your septic system and prevent unwanted problems this Halloween.

Fall is a great time to make sure your septic system is ready for the colder months ahead.

Take a few minutes to rake leaves and debris away from the tank and drain field, check lids and risers for cracks, make sure gutters and downspouts direct water away from the system, and trim back roots and shrubs that could interfere with septic components.

A little fall maintenance now can help prevent bigger problems later.
