Not every crawl space is a good candidate for encapsulation. For homes in flood zones, homes built on piers, or crawl spaces that remain open to the outdoors, closed-cell spray foam on the underside of the floor can be a great alternative. This attic went from a vented, inefficient space to a fully sealed, spray foamed roof deck that now brings the entire area into the home’s thermal boundary. By insulating along the roofline, the ductwork and structure are now inside conditioned space, which significantly improves energy efficiency, comfort, and overall performance of the home. One question we get asked is why we leave a small gap at the top of the spray foam in a crawl space. This is called a termite strip, and it allows pest control companies to easily spot any termite activity before it becomes a bigger issue. While the crawl space is still fully sealed and protected to help with moisture, comfort, and energy efficiency, this small exposed section helps protect the home long term and keeps everything up to code.

Most homeowners don’t realize how much air moves through recessed lights. These photos show heat escaping into the attic and cold air dropping back in. It’s a big contributor to comfort issues and higher energy bills. Since many lights aren’t rated for insulation contact, we box and seal them first to keep things safe and stop the air leakage.
