Why Does Your Toilet Gurgle When the Washing Machine Drains? 🚽🫧
Your toilet shouldn’t have a conversation with your washing machine.
When a washing machine drains, it sends a large amount of water into your drainage system quickly. If water and air aren’t moving properly through the system, another fixture—often a toilet—may begin bubbling or gurgling.
That sound can be an early warning sign.
Possible causes include:
🚧 A partially restricted drain or main sewer line
🌳 Tree-root intrusion
🧻 Wipes and debris
🛢️ Grease, sludge or buildup
🧱 Aging, cracked or offset pipe
🌬️ A plumbing venting issue
Pay attention if the gurgling is accompanied by:
🚽 Toilets bubbling when other fixtures drain
🚿 Water rising in a shower or bathtub
💧 Water appearing at a basement floor drain
🌀 Multiple slow drains
👃 Sewer odors
🔄 Recurring clogs or backups
The goal isn’t simply to make the noise disappear.
Find out WHY it’s happening.
A video sewer inspection can help determine whether you’re dealing with a localized drain problem, a restriction farther down the sewer line, tree roots, damaged pipe—or something else entirely.
Depending on what we find, SCC can provide:
