Spotted Lantern Fly nymphs (black with white spots). A relatively new invasive pest to our area. Perhaps you’ve dealt with them as full sized adults, with their aggressive and quite literal “in your face” defense measure, where they, you guessed it, fly right at you when approached. No known predators have been observed to keep their numbers in check!
Though attracted naturally to ailanthus trees, they’ll eat and lay their egg sacks just about anywhere that’s smooth. Their secretions often attract bees, but also create the perfect conditions for sooty mold to form due to the high sucrose content, and can ruin lower plantings, and even personal property
Here, we’ve installed sticky tape plus additional adhesive approximately 8” wide and 3-4’ off of the ground to catch the nymphs before they do their worst and feed off of the foliage.
It’s been quite effective as you can see. The tape is inspected weekly and more adhesive is applied when necessary.
For the DIY’ers out there, inside out duct tape will work as well! It won’t retain its stickiness for long so make sure to check it often and re apply when necessary to help protect your trees, landscape and possibly more from these pests!
