With the time you’ve saved, maybe consider planting a few trees on your property or go for a walk and enjoy the beauty that the fall foliage also provides.

The leaves in your yard might be starting to fall to the ground. But if you were planning to add raking to your weekend to-do list, think again.

Spotted Lantern Fly nymphs (black with white spots). A relatively new invasive pest to our area. Perhaps you’ve dealt with them as full sized adults, with their aggressive and quite literal “in your face” defense measure, where they, you guessed it, fly right at you when approached. No known predators have been observed to keep their numbers in check!

Though attracted naturally to ailanthus trees, they’ll eat and lay their egg sacks just about anywhere that’s smooth. Their secretions often attract bees, but also create the perfect conditions for sooty mold to form due to the high sucrose content, and can ruin lower plantings, and even personal property

Here, we’ve installed sticky tape plus additional adhesive approximately 8” wide and 3-4’ off of the ground to catch the nymphs before they do their worst and feed off of the foliage.

It’s been quite effective as you can see. The tape is inspected weekly and more adhesive is applied when necessary.

For the DIY’ers out there, inside out duct tape will work as well! It won’t retain its stickiness for long so make sure to check it often and re apply when necessary to help protect your trees, landscape and possibly more from these pests!

Crane school. Learning how to do tree removals with the assistance of cranes. This is our second time attending the class, learning more and more each year and bonding with our fellow tree guys and gals.

This year we are at Malvern Retreat House with 60 other students as well as a ton of volunteers that help this event be as impactful and educational as possible.

Many thanks to those who have volunteered time out of their very busy schedules to make this happen and to Pete over at The Crane Man for putting it on every year. It just keeps getting better and better

Significant canopy die back, decay as well as severe fungal presence and it’s proximity to two homes deemed this 64” diameter Beech tree a hazard, which prompted its removal.

Hate to take down such a magnificent specimen such as this, but it’s time had come. We took all of the precautions we could to make sure that the surrounding trees weren’t damaged during the removal process so that they now can take advantage of the extra sunlight and nutrition gained by its removal.

Unfortunately due to the decay present, we will not be able to mill this tree into lumber, but it will be turned into firewood as well as mulch so that it can continue to provide for others

YOUR TREES ARE NOT THE ENEMY!

Having been all around Camden and Gloucester County this past week assessing storm damage, none of the damage observed came as a surprise. Each damaged or wind thrown tree had predictable and preventable issues.

Many wind thrown trees had given off warnings of root loss, with a majority of them occupying the small sliver of soil between the side walk and pavement.

Almost all of the damaged trees observed that had lost large portions of their canopy had easily identifiable structural concerns that are easily observed and remediated.

Some had significant decay, not always easy to spot to the untrained eye, some due to poor pruning practices that had taken place many years ago, with limbs far too large being removed and the tree not having the ability to grow over the wound created which significantly compromised its ability to compartmentalize the decay before it became the problem it did

If you’ve experienced damage to your trees due to the storms, feel free to give us a call and we will do the best we can to fit you into our schedule. If you’ve already had the storm damage taken care of, DEFINITELY give us a call and have your property assessed by one of our certified arborists. It could prevent your next emergency

This still rings true now. Yes, we have been dealing with high winds, and yes, trees can fail in high winds, but much of the damage seen in the area was foreseeable and preventable.

Stop calling tree care companies that offer emergency services and start handling the emergency BEFORE it becomes one! If you are currently dealing with an emergency regarding your trees, and you already have “a tree guy/gal” then you’re dealing with the wrong “Tree guy/gal”.

It’s on these windy days that I like to remind our customers that, just because the tree is swaying and rocking doesn’t mean it’s a threat to you and your home.

Also, if a tree does happen to have come down, 9 out of 10 times there is no need to call an “emergency service” tree care company. The damage, whatever it may be, has already taken place, the “Emergency” was actually before the winds came. More times than not, it could have been detected and prevented if the right arborist had been given a chance to access your property.

Rarely are we surprised by the trees that fail. There are usually signs that the tree is susceptible to failure, such as

1. The tree is dead (duh)
2. Fruiting bodies are present on the trunk or within the root zone of the tree
3. Co dominant leaders that have yet to be cabled or braced
4. Loss of foliage (during the spring and summer months, duh) within the canopy signaling potential root loss
5. New construction near any tree.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your trees, feel free to message us to set up an appointment with one of our certified arborists.

If another company has told you that your trees MUST come down, please call us for a second opinion. Fear mongering is very much alive and well in our area and seldom is the person condemning your trees educated enough to do so
