If you ever smell gas in your home, don't go looking for the source, and don't use your phone or light switches inside. Get everyone out of the house first, then call 911 or your gas company from outside.

Don't use your heating system again until a professional has checked it.

Here's a 30-second check for anyone with a gas furnace. ⏱️

Turn the furnace off, pull the filter, and hold it up to the light. If you can barely see through it, it's time for a new one. A clogged filter makes your furnace work harder than it needs to.

Before you actually need the heat, turn it on for a few minutes and make sure it starts and warms up the house. It's a lot better to find out on a mild evening than at 2 a.m. in January.
