I’ve just returned home after helping to close the chapter at La Machinna Fissa in Mantova, Italy, home of Reading Retreats in Rural Italy for the past 10 years. This spectacular maze of buildings began as a 17th-century villa, became a 19th-century pump house, and later evolved into ad hoc housing for local families.
When Clark Lawrence moved here in 2015, it was little more than a hovel and over the years, he transformed it into a work of art. The parties, events, and countless meals shared around his kitchen table have created warm connections that transcend language and culture. It was a stressful and difficult helping Clark and company pack and move, but I would not have missed it for the world. I got to say a bittersweet goodbye to a very special space.
At the beginning of next week, the Association will move to new—and even more beautiful—surroundings in the hills above Piacenza. Stay tuned for updates.
