What do Tussock Moths, Monarch Butterflies, and Humans have in common?
We can all eat common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca)! The moths and butterflies eat the leaves but the seed pods are edible for humans. The trick is harvesting the pods when they are still bright green and spongy. The taste and texture are a cross between Okra and Artichokes minus the "gooey" texture okra has from soluble fiber.
It's getting late in the season for harvesting now, but definitely an interesting ingredient for those who like to forage.
