One of the most common questions I get is:

“How many outlets can be on one breaker?”

The electrical code doesn’t give a strict number, but electricians use load calculations as a guideline.

A common rule of thumb is:

15-amp circuit → about 9 outlets
20-amp circuit → about 12 outlets

But here’s the part most people don’t realize…
Breakers don’t care about the number of outlets
They care about the total electrical load

So you could have 3 outlets and still trip a breaker if you’ve got:

• a space heater
• an air fryer
• a microwave
all running at once 😅

Fun fact
Most older homes were built when people had WAY fewer electronics

Today the average home has 2–3x more electrical demand than it did 30–40 years ago

That’s why modern kitchens now require multiple dedicated circuits instead of just one
Speaking of that…

Certain things should always be on their own circuit:

• sump pumps
• refrigerators
• dishwashers, garbage disposals..
• microwaves
• washing machines
• bathroom outlets
• garage outlets
• HVAC equipment

Another quick fact

About 80% of nuisance breaker trips I see are from overloaded circuits, not bad breakers
So if your breaker keeps tripping…
it’s usually doing exactly what it’s supposed to do

Ever notice an outlet that’s installed upside down and wonder if someone messed up?

Sometimes it’s actually done on purpose.

Electricians will flip an outlet so the ground is on top in certain situations.

Sometimes it’s used to let you know which outlet is controlled by a wall switch, especially in older homes where this was a popular way to indicate it.
You’ll usually see this in living rooms where a lamp is plugged in and controlled by a switch.

In many commercial buildings, outlets are actually installed this way on purpose and it’s considered a standard in a lot of applications.

It can also provide a small safety benefit. If a plug isn’t fully inserted and something metal falls behind it, the ground prong will make contact first instead of the hot prongs.

Soo if you see an upside-down outlet, there’s a good chance it was intentional.

Upside down outlets aren’t mistakes… they’re just electricians leaving you little clues.

Little electrical details like that usually have a reason behind them.

Chuck Norris doesn’t need a voltage tester… electricity tells him if it’s live ⚡️

He doesn’t trip breakers—breakers trip themselves out of fear.

GFCIs don’t protect him… he protects the GFCI.

He doesn’t run wire… the wire runs where he tells it.

And if there’s a short? It fixes itself before he even shows up.

GFCI outlets..you know those outlets with the little TEST and RESET buttons?

Yeah… those aren’t just there to confuse you 😅

They’re called GFCI outlets, and they’re one of the biggest reasons electrical accidents have dropped over the years.

Fun fact!

Since GFCIs became common, electrocutions in homes have dropped by over 80%
Not bad for a little $20 device.

So what do they actually do?

A GFCI monitors electricity going out and coming back.
If even a tiny bit of electricity goes somewhere it shouldn’t…
like through water… or you…
It shuts off power in less than 1/40th of a second
That’s faster than you can say
“why is my hair dryer in the sink?” 😬

You’ll usually find them anywhere water is nearby

Bathrooms
Kitchens
Garages
Basements
Outside
Basically anywhere your bad decisions could involve water

People hit reset and move on
But if a GFCI keeps tripping, it’s usually telling you something isn’t right

Thinking about a Generator after these recent Storms? I know i would be

We all have different budgets so heres some options!

Here is your chance to get some good information before you call to save you the hassle

Your options from cheapest to most expensive

• Extension cords only (cheapest, temporary use only)
• Portable generator + interlock + inlet (best bang for your buck)
• Portable generator + manual transfer switch (mid-range, most controlled setup)
• Whole-house standby generator (most expensive, fully automatic)

Extension Cord Setup (Cheapest)

This is the basic “plug things directly into the generator” setup.
It works in a pinch, but comes with downsides:
• limited to a few devices
• cords running through doors/windows
• no safe way to power hardwired systems like furnaces
Good for emergencies, but not a long-term solution.

Portable Generator + Interlock + Inlet (Best Value)

This is one of the most popular setups.
It includes:
• an outdoor generator inlet box
• a panel interlock safety device
• a generator cord (30A or 50A)

This allows you to backfeed your panel safely while preventing utility power from being on at the same time.

You can run multiple circuits, but you have to manage your load manually (turning breakers on/off).

Portable Generator + Manual Transfer Switch (Most Control)

This is where things get more user-friendly and organized.

A manual transfer switch is a separate panel (usually installed near your main panel) that lets you select specific circuits you want powered during an outage.

Typical circuits wired into a transfer switch:
• sump pump
• furnace
• refrigerator
• kitchen outlets
• lights

• no guessing which breakers to turn on/off
• clearly labeled switches for each circuit
• safer and easier for anyone in the house to operate
• prevents overloading your generator
Instead of managing your whole panel, you’re only powering pre-selected critical circuits, which makes everything more efficient and controlled.

This is a great middle-ground option for families that want something simple, safe, and reliable without going with a more costly option like a full standby generator.

Whole-House Standby Generator (Most Expensive)

These are the fully automatic systems installed outside your home.

When power goes out:
• the generator starts automatically
• power transfers within seconds
• your home runs like nothing happened
They run on natural gas or propane and can power most or all of the home depending on size.

A few important things to know:
• proper placement and clearances are critical
• they require regular maintenance
• improper installs can create serious safety hazards

Important Safety Tip

No matter what setup you choose:

Generators should always be placed at least 20 feet away from the home, away from windows and doors, to prevent carbon monoxide from entering.

The right setup depends on your home, your budget, and how much of your house you want to keep running.

A standard outlet with two vertical slots is a 15-amp outlet, which is the most common type in homes.
