The is variety stays nice and compact and round. It’s called purple dome and I love the vibrant purple they bring this time of year.

PUMPKIN BARS WITH BROWNED BUTTER FROSTING RECIPE from Tried And True Moms

Pumpkin Bars with Browned Butter Frosting Recipe

ingredients:

1 1/2 cups white sugar

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 Cup sour cream

1 stick salted soft butter

1 1/2 cups pumpkin

2 eggs

2 tsp vanilla

2 cups flour

1 tsp Baking soda

1 tsp Salt

1 tsp cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice

2 sticks butter

8-12 Tbsp milk

2 tsp vanilla

4-6 cups powdered sugar (I use 2.5-3 cups of sugar because I think it’s too sweet and grainy when you add more.)

directions:

Blend together sugars, sour cream, and butter. Add pumpkin, eggs, vanilla, and blend. Add flour, baking soda, salt, and spice. Pour into greased jellyroll pan, bake at 350 degrees for 27 min. When cake cools, brown 2 sticks butter. When browned, add 8-12 Tbsp milk, vanilla, 4-6 cups powdered sugar. Mix till creamy. Spread onto cake while still warm. Let cool. Enjoy!

Trench edge will forever be my preferred way to do a border. Once or twice a year we’ll sharpen it up with the shovel, but it’s otherwise very low maintenance, does a good job of keeping the sod from quickly creeping into the flower beds, and looks fresh and defined. Not to mention that the only expense is some elbow grease and it’s easy to expand or redesign when the mood strikes.

I usually leave all my perennials uncut over the winter, but anything that has disease gets cut down and the foliage disposed of in the trash. Leaving it in the garden over the winter or chopping and dropping ensures you’ll have disease again the next year that can spread.

Bindw**d is very difficult to control without herbicide. It’s the only w**d I pull out the herbicide for. I’m using glyphosate, quinclorac is also effective but do not use it near where you’ll grow edibles. Here are some tips for safe application:
1.Spray when the temperatures are cool. High temperatures can cause it to aerosol and drift to yours and your neighbors desirable plants and trees causing damage.
2. Spray when there is no breeze or wind.
3. Take steps to control where the spray goes. I’ve used a cup over the nozzle, a piece of cardboard to shield a nearby plant… anything to help keep the spray localized to the w**d and not your plants you want to keep.
4. Protect yourself. Wear closed toes shoes, long pants, and gloves.
Spraying NOW in early fall is the most effective time to treat while the bindw**d is taking nutrients deep into its root system to store up for winter. You’ll kill more of the root system now than you would by spraying at any other time of year.
