This doorway hadn't been used for a while ... the opening wasn't square, the door was hard to open and shut ... so the homeowner caulked it shut. Six years ago.

LOL - that's one solution.

Also, the portico had never been shingled properly and wood rot had set it.

All brand-new, squared up, and working properly. How does it look?

Shaping one style of moulding to fit neatly to the contours of a different style that it abuts is called scribing.

We transformed this simple cased opening into a Victorian room divider befitting the turn-of-the-century home by adding turned spindles, dental moulding and cornices, carved columns and raised-panel pedestals. Cherry wood throughout.
