In this video, the purple-leafed penstemon cultivar is most present, but off to the right a bit you can see the eastern u.s. native straight species, penstemon digitalis peppered in the clump!

When creating pollinator gardens for clients, we typically include cultivars of eastern u.s. natives since those are the most commercially available, but when we can, we try to lean toward straight native species, unless other ornamentals/ herbs are requested. We know of some great nurseries around that offer natives or have in recent years added natives to their typical ornamentals + herbs + veggies (yay!) but if y’all know of some nurseries based in Durham that you’d like to recommend to us to support, give them (or yourself!) a shout in the comments or our messages! It’s easiest for us to grab & go on the day of installation if possible, but definitely have clients with specific requests that we could reach out ahead of time to acquire from you. :-) Thanks so much!!

Pollinator garden transformation!! 🌼

You may recognize that cute little shed- that’s cause this is the same location! We spend just a few short days here, but installed a rain barrel, a veggie bed garden, *and* a pollinator garden! Veggie bed & whole project pics to come. 😎 This was a fun one!

This rain collecting system is looking comfy snuggled up at its new home!! 🌧️

We spent multiple days in this yard installing a pollinator garden and veggie bed space, but couldn’t help to give the rain barrel its own stage here on the socials. :-) This is a very good example that a lot of water can still be collected on small spaces- even sheds! With a few good, heavy rainfalls, this barrel will be full and ready to start watering the crops nearby!

Pre-assembled, simple rain barrels are hard to come by these days, but we’ve got you covered! Our team will acquire all the pieces, put it together, hand build a sturdy wooden stand, and come lock it all in place for you, setting you up for years of water (& $!) saving success. We revisited a spot that we put a native garden in a few months back and everything is thriving!! For anyone who thinks gardening can’t be done in the wintertime~ let this be your proof. :-) Of course we’re talking perennials in this case, but our team came out in the dead of winter with about an inch of frozen ground to break through for getting edging and plants in, yet the garden succeeded. In fact, since they had their time to slowly establish over the last few months, we got blooms! Typically the best time to get plants in the ground is during super mild times of the year like spring and fall, but we bundled up and made it work. 💪

Looking forward to see how this space fills out even more in the coming months! 💚

Happy Monday! The coral honeysuckle is already chugging along nicely and we await the hoards of hummingbirds that will nectar on it! ❤️

We highly recommend getting one of these native vines- they have a very long bloom period, starting as early as March and finishing early winter if it’s a mild one. :-) Plus they multiply and root extremely easily and transplant just as well so you really only need to buy one plant! This one pictured here that is multiple feet long and covered in blooms is from a transplanted tiny rooted vine just 3 few years back. 👏 Getcha one at your local native nurseries!
