More progress on the pollinator garden including a newly planted Pawpaw. Hopefully some zebra swallowtail butterflies are in our future!

I’ve reached the point in this project where I’m ready to be done but there is still more work to do. I spotted several monarch caterpillars today which was a great reminder that my efforts are making a difference even though progress feels slow.

Fun shopping trip Big Bloomers Flower Farm and some new to me Heuchera TERRA NOVA® Nurseries. The Fyre Wing series is new for 2026!

Stepping stones are set and more plants are going in. Very excited to see this native garden for pollinators taking shape.

Good morning from JC Raulston Arboretum where I’m touring the summer trial beds. If you want to see which plants have held up in our summer weather it is definitely worth stopping by.

An update on the backyard after a full day of work this weekend. It’s coming along but still has a ways to go. More invasives have been removed, a few plants have been planted, and I added a path to the scope of work. Slow and steady progress.

Talking succession trees and how to select and remove plants that have seeded into the garden. Lots of work underway including planting and excavating for the new path!

You really can’t beat trailing vinca in the summer. Two Roosters ice cream is also a good idea.

Shopping trip Durham Garden Center for some native perennials for my back garden project. Found some good possibilities - their staff is also very knowledgeable if you have questions or need suggestions.

Back at it this morning talking site analysis - sun and soil conditions. Like many gardens this depends on the time of year, but in general I’m planning for full to partial sun during the warmer months and less light during our cool season when the sun is lower in the sky. Soil is the elusive moist but well drained combo that many plants love! I’m letting everything dry out a bit before I continue removal but in the meantime let me know what you’d plant here!
