Small choices can make a big difference for backyard wildlife 🌿 Leaving leaf litter, keeping some dead branches, preserving a little bare soil, and switching off unnecessary outdoor lights can create valuable shelter and habitat.

The asters are starting to bloom. The small white ones are actually a number of different species and we’ll try to cover some of them. This one is calico aster (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum). It has a large native range, including most of Georgia. Small dark green leaves are a beautiful foil for the tiny white flowers whose disk centers sport a range of colors over time. Like many of the small white asters, this plant goes unnoticed for much of the growing season until it bursts into bloom. Small bees and skippers love it.
